F-18A RAAF (Italeri 1/72)

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, this will be the second plane this year (the previous one was another f-18!), now I'm making an early F-18A from the Royal Australian Air force or RAAF. The plane itself it's the second nearest fighter in the photo, or the A21-9 (photo from the web, doesnt belong to me):

Hi Bruno,

Nice work and great subject, nice to see a RAAF 3SQN Hornet build.

On you question on the pilots gear, At the time of this photo, the pilots would have worn green flying suits and light grey helmets. I was based at Williamtown at the time 3SQN had updated there aircraft to the Hornet. I was still working on Mirages at the time though.

Similar to this 🙂 (this is me after a Mirage flight in 1987)

Good progress these Bruno, I'm keen to do one of these too sometime, I saw a 3 sqn machine perform at an airshow here in New Zealand in 1987 & was hugely impressed at it, the one & only time I've ever seen a Hornet in the flesh, mine was A21-11, not too far different from yours. :)

Most likely one of these in the background of this poor quality Mirage shot Steve. This was taken at Ohakea that year. I am standing on the back of the 4th Mirage our Squadron took over for the airshows that year.

OK, the Harewood show was one of the first in the 'season', we arrived for the Ohakea show and then went up to Whenuapia. I got to watch the whole airshow 9 times (including practices). It was a good 2 weeks in you fare land!

Yes, Hawkeye has a lot of Hornet sheets for the early schemes.

Sorry for the thread hijack Bruno, looking forward to your next update :D

If the clear barnish is ready tonight, I'll be adding the decals!

Hope you like what i've done so far, see you soon!

  • 3 weeks later...

Hello there! I've been kinda busy the last couple weeks, so I couldn't progress a lot in the plane.

Anyway here are some pics (After matt coat):

Also I painted the exhaust and the gun muzzle, but I didn't take pictures of it, also painted the sidewinders. Now I have to paint the red borders on the landing gear doors and the navigation lights.

See you soon!
