Sandy, No not the Grease Tribute. A 1 H Skyraider

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody peeps, I did it again.

The Raptor was getting me down so I started this lovely plane.

The box lid

Some loud decals.

The decals.

And I decided to build this one.

I like the SEA colours.

This one, I think.

The parts.

Parts A.

Parts B 1

Parts C .

Parts E.

Not many parts thankfully.

Starting from the beginning, the office.

CC 1

As you can see basic, no moulded details really.

And a poor control column, so out with the brass tubing/rod.

CC 4

CC 2

CC 2

CC 5

Given a coat of primer.

PS 4

And then painted and added decals.

OD 1

OK , it`s coffee time now

All comments welcome.

OK, coffee`d up, plus a fag it`s back to posting.

The U/C bays are a little soft on detail.

UC D 1

So I removed most of what was there and started to highlight.

Att 1

Building up the boxes with some strip plastic and a piece of cotton bud stem.

Att 3

I didn`t like this, it looked horrid, so after several attempts I come up with this.

Att 6

I did the piping first.

Att 7

Then added the ribs.

I glued cut up pieces of strip in-between the pipe work 0.5 mm.

The pies were 0.5 mm too, the longer strips of 0.5 mm over the top of them to give the look of the pipes running through the ribs.

Att 8

I was happy with that.

Next the walls.

Walls 1

And fitted.

Walls fitted.

I did the same to the other side and then gave them a coat of primer.

PS 2

Sorry about the ending there on the last posting.

All that needs to be done is detail painting washes etc.

While down under , so to speak, it was the U/C that was fun to.

UC 6

The prong sticking off the main leg, interfered with the brace as to fit well.

So I cut it off and and cut a piece of plastic rod.

UC 7

The filed a groove into one end.

UC 8

Before filing a flat on the other.

Then glued into place.

UC 2

The same was done for the other leg too.

Before priming and painting.

POUC 3

Fag break coming up.

All comments welcome.

Gotta love a spad! Following this, I have an old 1:72 Airfix kit on my shelf of doom. If nothing else it may convince me to finally bin it and get this kit instead! :D

She is not a bad kit Clive.

The fit is reasonable as far as I can see although a lack of detail in places is off putting.

Also a small amount of under wing stores to.

Lovely project...

...but it's a little distressing from the box art to realize that the purely-military designation 'A-1H' could actually be trademarked. There are way-y-y-y-y too many lawyers around!

Thanks thorrfinn, you are to right there sir.

The amount of kits that are licensed out there is unreal.

Extra cost too.

    Roger

You are welcome Roger, tea coffee? or something stronger?

OK now the fuselage.

A pair of dive brakes.

DB 1

A bit of filler needed.

DB 2

And clamping too.

DB 3

And a coat of primer.

PS 6

The cannon barrels were removed.

Guns 1

And new ones made of brass added.

Guns 2

That`s enough for now.

Coffee break.

Before you paint the windshield, you should be aware that Skyraider did not have metal strips between the side panels and the armoured glass. They were butt-joined, and there was sealant between the panes, but no frames.

The correct way to represent this would be to scribe thin lines where the frames would be, then use gray wash in them.

Also, the centre armoured glass panel is too narrow on Italeri's model, as well as having a curved armoured glass (it should be flat). The outer sides of the framing are approximately the correct width for the centre panel (the inner lines should be sanded and polished).

There are good pictures and drawings on Tommy's website: http://tailhooktopics.blogspot.com/2015/11/whats-under-ad-skyraider-canopy.html

This is looking good Simon. Even though its a bigger scale than mine, there is good info in here for me too. I do like the SEA scheme on the Sandie's, one of mine is ear marked for this.

Don't be too quick to diss the old Airfix one Clive, I've seen the jobs you do on some pretty dodgy kits & I think you'd romp on home with the Airfix Spad, I picked one up recently with decals for the same scheme as the boxart for Simon's one, I think its a cracker. :)

Ha, not wishing to hijack a very interesting thread, but for me the issues were largely self-inflicted - I made a right mess of replacing the raised panel lines with ones I scribed myself. The wings and the tail ended up looking like the track plan at Waterloo station! If that were not bad enough, I spent big on after-market detailing sets for the cockpit, the wheels and the undercarriage which were designed for the Hasegawa kit. Suffice it to say, in no way was the designer even remotely considering the Airfix kit as another option!

Great start on this ancient kit. I still have a bunch stashed. I'll watch with great interest and add my 2 cents if and when needed.

You are more than welcome Roy.

The build could be sporadic due to life getting the way but hopefully I am up to date with posting what I have done so far.

Talking of which I have the details to pick out in the wheel bays ,and on the U/C.

Engine to paint, varnish wash etc.

Same with rocket pods and drop tank to.

Not forgetting the wheels and tail wheel.

And the tail hook too.

Also varnishing (Gloss) the pit , pylons etc for decals washes etc .

A list to be getting on with at some stage.

All comments welcome.

Lovely start. I thought the Raptor was finished for a minute. Great work on the wheel wells. 🙌 keep it up Simon. 😀

Johnny

Cheers Johnny, the Raptor is on the back burner for now, but will get back to her soon.

Not much to report.

Due to family etc, my time at the bench has been limited to say the least.

The good lady has restarted her Hurricane again , spraying some XF 16 around.

I added some XF 56 to it and laid some paint down of these bits.

Silver engine

A bit bright?

Silver prop.

That`s not so bad, a bit of pre-weathering.

The rocket pods need something a bit darker too, as well as the engine.

Silver rockets.

A bit grainy too.

Any how, I better get on with re organizing the bench.

I really like what you did to the wheel bays!  The new 3D detailing makes an amazing difference.

Thank you sir, it was the first attempt at scratch building on that scale and was happy enough with the results.
