Convair R3Y-1 Tradewind

Recommended Posts

Decals on (didn't take long, there aren't many), satin coat, and matt black anti-glare panel painted. Unfortunately unmasking the anti-glare panel pulled up a bit of a decal, but I have another so can deal with that. Meanwhile I've cleaned up and primed the props - not really looking forward to masking 24 blade tips! - and assembled and primed the beaching gear.

I'm rather enjoying watching this come together, I'd be much tempted in one of these myself if it wasn't so big, a 1/144 version would set my heart racing. When I was a kid, 4-5 years approx, I was given a plastic flying boat toy, biggish, probably about 18" wing span which for a wee chap is quite big. It was just a simple thing, a bare shell but with the distinctive wing float struts & more importantly upward hinged nose, yes, an R3Y-2. Goodness knows what ever happened too it but I've long been fascinated by these. I reckon it was one of these, though mine was all blue.

Steve.

Thanks @stevehnz and @bigbadbadge. Steve, this one isn’t all that huge - it’s 1/144 and about 30cm long. It would be a big beast in 1/144! The thing that had me pause for thought before buying it was the price, but obviously I got past that. I’ve enjoyed this build, would build more Anigrand kits in this scale, but not too often, my wallet wouldn’t cope!

I should have twigged that seeing it against your Phantom or maybe just read the tabs. :( :D

Steve.

That would have made the Phantom 1/24 scale - now that would be a hell of a kit!

Quite a few smallish jobs done today. Painted the nose, touched up a bit of the paint around the windscreen, painted the props (and fixed the one blade that broke off in the process), painted the beaching gear. Also dropped the beaching gear on the floor, breaking the legs off in the process, could have fixed it tonight but since I'm obviously being clumsy decided to call it a night!

Nearly there!

Julian, does the beaching gear come with the kit ?

I'm having to scratch build one for the Dornier 26-V as Amodel provide only a highly unlikely bit of pseudo planking with a furniture castor on each corner, hardly likely to support the weight in real life.

Wonder if you can provide a couple of close-up shots, reckon I've got the makings scattered around.

Much obliged in anticipation........Rog

If it is any help I have the beaching gear for the Supermodel Bv138 I could send pics of - might be more appropriate? If interested send me a PM.

Doh !!

I have built the Bv138 and I can take a pattern from that, thanks Peter. The answer to my "problem" was staring me in the face !!

My senior moments seem to be getting more and more frequent...........!

Thank you both for your offers of help.

I'm calling this done, for now - might come back and add some detail to the beaching gear later on.

Wheels and legs went onto the beaching gear easily enough with the help of a bit of brass rod. Then there were just a few touch ups to the beaching gear, props on, and done. Very glad I built this - I've enjoyed it.

Time to start the Be-200!

One photo here, more in the gallery shortly.

This one is new to me too (but then anything which floats is probably new to me....). That would be rather large for my collection (even in 1/144 scale) but it would certainly stand out in any collection. Very informative build log too.
