Popular Post Alan P
This was a real slog but worth it in the end. Full build thread is in the 2019 Lockheed Groupbuild. Please go and give the whole GB some love, it's only gathered 10 votes in total for the excellent selection of builds in the gallery. The Kitty Hawk kit has a well-earned poor reputation but if you absolutely, positively must have a 1/48 F-35B on your shelf it's the only option. If you grit your teeth and stick it out, the result is worth it. By all means check out my build thread for top tips on how to conquer the worst examples of the kit's bizarre tooling and odd build progression(!): Well, here's the result dressed up in a prospective display scheme for the RN's return to fixed wing carrier aviation (yay!): It's posed in the hover, so I had to do a bit of extra work to pose it properly: lengthened the gear oleos posed the pilot appropriately dropped the flaps repositioned the stabilizers and rebuilt the mountings built a ropey but functional stand for display! The display decals are from Model Alliance's 1/48 RN Display Teams sheet. Very nice quality and a lot of options for plenty of aircraft. I used the decals from 809's Buccaneer display aircraft and added the lightning flash (Lightning! Yeah?) from the Scimitar. It's not a proper airshow display unless you open everything up - the weapons bays are the excellent aftermarket parts by KASL Hobby of Korea. I also used Eduard's exterior etch set. I also did a lot of scratch detailing in the wheelbays and other open panels, and the tailpipe: I lifted the idea for the paintwork from @SaminCam who did a beautiful job of the RAM surface by painting over a polished aluminium undercoat. I used Colourcoats FS36170 Camouflage Gray over Alclad Polished Alu and it really nailed the look, even changing under different lighting just like the real aircraft. The contrasting RAM tape is painted in MRP Camouflage Gray using DN Models masks which are a must for this kit. Well, that's her finished - please take a look at the other builds in the GB, I think it's one of the better groupbuilds I've seen, with a lot of finished builds and some excellent variety. All the best, Alan
stevehnz
Nice job on that Alan, I'm still struggling to give these things much love but if they all looked like yours I could be persuaded to revise that opinion. Steve. 4
Harold55
Wow, what a great job on his kit - love job you did on the bomb bays, just fantastic!

Alpha Delta 210
Absolutely awesome result on this odd-looking machine!
Devilfish
Very nice. I did something very similar a few years ago. I do wonder why people keep insisting on painting the RAM tape on the fuselage a different colour still, when on all the latest ones the aircraft is a uniform colour all over. One 48
Very nice, would love to build a B in 1/48 but I don't have your skills if this kit is as hard work as you suggest? I'll wait and see if someone else does one, Tamiya hopefully and I'd be happy to pay extra for the kind of engineering quality associated with them. Have more than enough to keep me going for years just now Great build.

Max Headroom
Very nicely built indeed. All those open panels - it must be a nightmare if you want to have them shut! Trevor
Alan P
Thanks very much everyone, this was a nice thread to come home to 🍻 Glad you like the build, I know the F-35 isn't everyone's cup of tea but it's definitely one of my faves. 10 hours ago, Devilfish said: Very nice. Thanks again. Got to admit if Tamiya does go down the F-35 road I'd expect it'll be the A version used by the JASDF of which there are already a couple of decent kits in 1/48. The Kitty Hawk A must be easier than this one, and Meng also does an A in 1/48. To be fair to KH this is an insanely busy and complex subject and to have made it this detailed is pretty good work by them. 26 minutes ago, Max Headroom said: All those open panels - it must be a nightmare if you want to have them shut! Thanks Trevor, the main gear doors needed to be closed on this one and once you cut off the hinges they fit perfectly. But why build one of these all closed up? Kind of defeats the unique selling point of this variant 😂 Thanks again you kind bunch, really appreciate your comments and observations 👍 Alan Edited August 30, 2019 by Alan P
Max Headroom
I’m doing Kitty Hawk’s Jag at the moment and closing those panels is.......interesting. The problem with all those panels is warping of the fuselage halves and rigidity. Trevor

junglierating
That's just super stuff. Just one issue your 809 emblem has LM on it ...Lossiemouth....much as I would like HMS Fulmar to rise again like 809s Phoenix I cant see it happening ...strange when you are up in Elgin and they find out you are navy the locals go all dewy eyed even though though they weren't even born when RNAS Lossiemouth closed...strange🤔😃
