Glimpses: A Day in the life of London Airport

Recommended Posts

In Dublin, the most common BAS visitors were Cambrian and Northeast Viscounts. Now and then Cambrian would send in one of their BAC 1-11s and on very rare occasions we might get to see a Northeast Trident.

It was also common to see BEA Viscounts in both Scottish and Channel Islands markings - not necessarily carrying out either Scottish or Channel Island flights either.

I hope not boring with a second (and last) set of 1973 Heathrow:

1. Maybe the most tasty bit of the whole set - Mexican Convair 990 Coronado (I remember identification!)

2. KLM DC9, Alitalia Caravelle, BEA Trident, Lufthansa 727 and 737, JAT DC9

Icelandic or as they say in Iceland... Flugfélag In my day that would be TF-FIE " Gullfaxi" off the top of my head

13. Andover.  Not 100%  of the airline but the name  Andover (CC.1 or CC .2) would mean it was  RAF so it is not . It's an HS748 ,cheatline has the look of BKS though .

Was it referred to as Icelandair in those days?

Thought so .I remember a Rousseau Aviation having Nord 262s and HS748s among other planes but they were French  . Ended up a part of BA's empire after Rousseau Aviation merged with TAT and became Air Liberte

Maybe I am wrong regarding the company, not the CV 990. This is just my recognition from 1973... I was looking with magification lenses on photo so far without any more details - only the "tanks" (un fact some aerodynamic elements) on wings gives visible reflections...So Convair is for sure.  I will try more

The "tanks" are "Kuchemann Carrots", designed to improve the behaviour of airflow over the wings at speeds close to the speed of sound - also seen on the Handley Page Victor.

The most regular user of 990s into Heathrow were Swissair. The only other operator who might have flown one into Heathrow would be Middle East Airlines (MEA) who operated them for a while.

That is a CV990

Apart from regular Swissair and MEA  ,Other 990 operators in to Heathrow were over the years and some not  very often.

Air France and Iberia 1967 leases only and Spantax before shifting to LGW

SAS  a handful of visits .

Convair 880s are really rare visitors

Swissair leased 2 in 1962

Japan Airlines 1963 ish

An outside chance a KLM leased CV880 from Viasa made it too

I was still sure that it is CV 990, but doubts arose about the company. I I must say - you are right, my memory plays a game with me apparently...

This is Swissair! With 2/3 of fin in red with white cross (by strong  mag. lens it looks a bit better then on this photo)

Just need the smells to go with that fabulous video! Funny, I don’t remember the Saudia 8’s. HS748 definitely Rousseau Aviation, and we used to get regular TAT F27’s too. Video looks like it was shot from the car park, did Queens building go that far West? Remember when spotting from car parks wasn’t a capital offence? And until last March, my office was almost behind one of those BA 747’s in cargo - what a view. Live near Newcastle now and any aircraft would be a bonus, anything.....
