Halftracks

Recommended Posts

I've been mulling this over and I've had a search which turned up nothing so here goes:

Halftracks. One or more wheels at the front, at least one continuous track at the back [1]

Things started with the Kégresse tracked vehicles produced in 1911 for Czar Nicholas (and Lenin had a half track Rolls Royce. Very egalitarian) progressed through the Holt tractors and British APCs of the Great War then went a bit crazy in the 30s and into WW2 (just two examples - the Sd.Kfz 251 had well over 20 specialised versions while the White M3 served with nearly 50 nations and for almost 50 years in versions from the basic APC to the heavily modified Israeli anti-tank missile carriers).

Have a little wander through here if you need some inspiration: Half Tracks

The List:

[1] If anyone is daft enough to attempt one, I'd be happy for the front wheel to be a ski so snowmobiles count :)

Add my name to the list, could be anything M3 AA Carrier maybe a scratch built M15, that or an Israeli M3 troop carrier. Then there is always my need to build an SDKFZ. 251 in some form maybe an AT gun version ? Of course i even like Snowmobiles and snowcats ? Would a Whif of a winterized M3 with Skis and hard roof as an USAF Arctic rescue vehicle. Or maybe convert it into a civilian snowcat be ok ?

Any and all of those sound good to me. I've got Russian, Polish and French candidates in the stash, and one of them is an airfield fire tender so that last one in the Arctic scheme would be in good company.

I like the idea as well. I have got a few in the stash. mainly WW 2 German, but it will fit the bill.

Cheers,

Welcome aboard. There's enough options there for a GB on it's own but I wanted it to be as inclusive as possible.

My uncle bought me a German halftrack for my Christmas when I was kid. Had a meltdown and he had to build it. I feel now I’m back modelling I should give this a proper go. It was definitely a tamiya something....

Taking the leap...please include me

Good man yourself. Tamiya currently have a nice range of Sd.Kfz 251s, including the only one in 1/48.

Yes!  Been thinking about armoured cars ... but half-tracks first sounds good!

I'll happily trade you there, I've got a few armoured cars in the stash too and there's always room for a few more

I will have a crack at a half wheelie thing.

I've now got visions of a souped up M3 hot rod smoking its tracks down the quarter mile :D

No, stay with half-tracks for now :)
I've started thinking about my build, and have one in mind already

I was actually thinking about a second GB, I reckon at least 50% of my armour stash isn't tanks, so any excuse to break some out.

Just gotta find someone to produce a m4 quad😎

That's the spirit. It'll be a couple of years before this lifts off, so plenty of time, but I'll add you to the list now.

Yes, so was I ... but the two together might compete with each other and split the vote.  Better to run them in seperate voting years? :)

Ah, with you now. I'm being a bit slow tonight. Yes, that's a very good plan.

Hi Andy,

I think I suggested such a GB way back during the Sherman GB, so I'm glad to discover someone has had more gumption than me and has actually taken steps to get one (potentially) going!

I have said that I'm dropping out of GBs for the time being, but would jump at the chance to take part in a Half-Track GB. I suspect if it's given the go ahead it will be in around a year's time, but I'd be up for it tomorrow if it were the case!

So, please put me down on the list.

I will be building Tamiya's classic Sd.Kfz 7/1 20mm Flakvierling Half-Track, a kit I first built in 1979. And it'll be in winter camo. Just for a change!

Very happy to have you both aboard. I'm sure we can look forward to another couple of top quality models. The Sd.kfz 7/1 has been on my wish list for years since I saw a conversion article in a magazine at a formative age.

'Formative'. word of the day,

I've just remembered that I also purchased the PE set for the Flakvierling as well. That should be fun!
