I have to see if I make a entry. The trouble at the moment is that I start models, but don't finish them. I still haven't got my mojo back.

Good luck with your build.

Hi Alistair,

Welcome to the GB! Great choice of entry, it's an impressive machine! I just wished SH produced a 1/72 version.

Will follow with great interest.

Cheers

Thanks Jaime ,i hopr i can do it justice .

Just got some masks and etch in the post  . Hope to avoid the kit decals and paint most of the markings . Still havnt decided which one to do . The Montex masks are for the same markings that come with the kit .48666517846_2c7cf3f7f2_b.jpgP1030206 by Alistair Pearce, on Flickr

As this is my first ever floatplane i thought it best to start with the floats .

haveing looked at other builds of this kit and also regarding a warning of fit issues in the Special hobby instructions i knew there were some problems that wouldneed to be sorted out .

The main issue it seems is tat the left and right hand parts are of different sizes producing a step nearly 0.75mm along the full length of the float .

haveing no location pins makes forcing the smaller half out and the larger part in very difficult so i added some plastic card tabs to the top so i could match the top surface as near as possible as if i build a diorama the bottom of the float wont be seen .

i first only glued the top surface and let dry over night , then following day glued the  bottom where i was able to force the parts together for an acceptable fit .

The top joint is far from perfect and large amounts of filler and subsequent sanding left much of the detail destroyd . It would have been very difficlt to have removed the seam that runs through the raised inspection hatches that run along the top surface so i scratched some new ones out of thin plastic card and stretched sprue  .

This float took the best part of a day . now iv commited iv got to do the other one tomorrow .

Good but challenging start, Alistair. The first float looks good and well detailed after all the effort, so it was well worth it :clap2:

Cheers

This is a good start. Have you done anymore? It looks like the challenging kit that I had expected,  but will be very rewarding if you get it finished.

Thanks Greg

Yes some more progress has been made .

Thefloats are now completed and have had the photo etch added and then a coat of halfords primer .

I have also masked ,inside and out all the transparences. This took almost as long as the float construction .Thank god i used the mask set as there is a lot of glazing on this bird.

Now these two steps are completed its time to move on to the fuselage . let more fun begin

How did the Montex masks work out with the curvy glazing as I have heard that they don't like going round bends?

Stuart

The Montex masks dont like curves as well as tape masks but last time i used them i whent ovet them just before painting pushing them down or filling any small gaps in centre of masks where they have been desighned to fold over themselfs  , with some copydex.

The masks are ,in my opinion , easier to use than tape masks and this set are a very good fit ,inside and out .

They are also easier to take off after painting .

To sum up even taking account of sticking to sharp external curves i prefere these masks .

Hope tis helps

Alistair

After a long day plugging away at the fuselage interior all plastic and resin has been attached and tweeking and sanding adjustments made so the two sides now close with ease ,

There are lots of bulkheads and other bits that need to line up but few if any loction markings so i recon i did around 20 dry fits during construction .

The instructions are a little unclear with the position of some parts so loads of help came from oyjer onlie builds .

here are some pictures of my intrerpritation .

I had to remove some of part F8 so that the bulkhead could slot in (red arrow)

Tomorrow some grey primer over the resin (after a big dust out to remove all the sandings ) and then out with the RLM 02 over interior and inside of glazing .
