Wouldn't say no to some burning torchyness, might actually disperse some of the local mongery!

Awesome paint job Craig, the SEA scheme does look good on the 104 for sure and the worn fading between the greens looks very good indeed. Also, I hope your son gets fighting fit again ASAP! 👍

Thanks David, much appreciated on both counts. The gloss is on the last coat so decals start tomorrow!

My son is gradually getting better thanks, its going to take a couple of weeks but there is definite progress.

Hi Craig. Hope your son is doing well and getting better every day. And I am very impressed with your paintwork. Hope the decals are going on well or do go on well when you get around to them.

Kind regards,

Stix

Sorry to hear about your son Craig , hopefully he is on the mend. I do think that a camoed F-104 gives it a certain different look as opposed to a natural metal finish.

A big thank you to all of you for your concern, I am very pleased to be able to tell you that he is indeed getting better by the day, hopefully he will be close to 100% by the end of next week.

I agree with you about F-104's looking good in camo and I will definitely be building more of them. I have made a start on the decals and so far so good, the trouble is there are hundreds of stencils and I'm not very patient!

  • 2 weeks later...

Just to prove that your host is still in the game I have some pics of how my F-104 looks at the moment. I have finally finished applying all the stencils (truly a test of anyone's sanity) and have also given a wash to the panel lines and details using some very thin Revell Tar Black, the next step will be to apply the matt coat. The decals from the kit and  from Bestfong behaved very well in general but a couple of the Bestfong ones were a little thick and some of the national markings were very slightly out of register with tiny bits of white visible in a few places which was really easy to sort out.

Anyway enough waffle here are the pics;

Well that's how things stand at the moment, I should manage to get the airframe finished at least by the new deadline (thanks Werner for suggesting it!) so I will concentrate on that rather than any armament.

Thanks for looking in and as usual all comments and criticisms are gratefully received.

Craig.

Hi Craig. Hope you are well. I'm just checking to see if you have had chance to do any more on this?

Kind regards,

Stix

I was literally in the middle of typing my update when your post came through Stix!

Looking great craig.

The stripey pitot tube a great detail too.

Thanks Paul, very much appreciated.

The pitot striping is actually a decal off the Bestfong sheet, I thought I would try it before painting it and it worked quite well and certainly saved some time.

very nice progress!

looks like you gonna make it!

Thanks Werner, yes I believe the airframe will be complete in time, not sure about the weapons though.

She is actually moving quite quickly now and had had the matt finish added and is also standing on her undercarriage, I will post pics tomorrow.

Damn that looks good Craig, I look forward to it completed! What did you use for the gloss layer? It looks flawless.

David

Thanks David, I'm still using the last of my Klear, I apply it with a wide flat brush rather than through the airbrush as it gets the results much quicker and doesn't leave any brush marks.

Cheers Craig for the info, how heavy a layer do you brush on? Or is it a case of multiple very thin layers to avoid the brush marks? (I'm rubbish at brush painting :) ) I think I might try this technique over a NMF because spraying Klear/Aqua gloss never works out so well for me and using more 'hot' clear layers might affect the Alclad.

I usually apply at least 3 coats built up over a day or two (it dries quite quickly) and it gets much better results than spraying it on. I would give it a test on a piece of scrap plastic before committing to the model you are building.

This is looking really good craig, top job

Cheers Glynn, I've actually got the airframe finished (woo hoo!) and am now concentrating on the twin missile launcher and the missiles, so even if I don't get them finished I can at least get the Starfighter into the gallery in time.
