Talbot Lago Record 1950, 1:24 scale, by Heller

Recommended Posts

Thanks for you kind words, my friends :)

In spite of the tiredness resulting of a hard day's work, I didn't even take the time to have my dinner, so much was I eager to begin the painting of the leather parts of the cabin: inner sides of door panels and seats 🙄

I've spent 5 hours for this preliminary job, because the Heller paint "mat leather" I'd purchased, really lovely and matching color, is very thick, and, even diluted 50/50 with Tamiya X20 thinner, it thickens and dries very quickly in the airbrush, sealing its holes and nozzles.

So, the painting job has been frequently interrupted or even corrupted by this problem, requiring many cleaning sessions, and many tries to find the good pressure in the airbrush, the correct adjusting of paint flow, and the correct thinning of the paint.

It's been done now, and I'm quite happy with the result 😎, even though it remains a lot of work to do on them:

- First: give them one or two layers of semi-mat clear. It's a mandatory step before beginning the weathering of the leather with brown wash,

- Second: Give a weathering to these parts and let them dry several days

- Third: painting chrome door handles and window-lift cranks.

Stay tuned if you like, next chapter tomorrow evening :)

The seats especially are looking really really good!

To get this aspect, already a bit weathered, I've primed first with Alclad Grey filler and primer, and next slightly and irregularly with Alclad whilte primer.

Generally, but not always, the grooves remained more grey than white, and the reliefs more white than grey

So the paint "mat leather" hasn't provided exactly the same color on grooves and relefs.

Just as simple as that :)

Waiting for Vallejo mat varnish to clear the seats and door panels, I've primed, yesterday evening, with Alclad White filler and primer, the floor of the interior cabin:

Once dried, it'll remain to paint the floor with "Heller 63 Matt sand", and then, after masking job, to paint "mat leather" some details on this floor, according to the ref. photos:

Later on, I think I could try to scratch-build the leather stowage compartment placed in front of the left door:

Stay tuned if you like and thanks for watching :)

No progress today, pity !

Because, when I got up this morning, my iMac was on strike, and after a deep check, it appeared that my session was corrupted and non recoverable, despite of 6 hours spent with Apple technical service !

So, I've had to format my hard disk and to reinstall MacOSX, and all my party applications !

I've not finished at the moment, and the following evenings will be monopolized by this job.

However, a little enhancement on left side interior panel. I've scratch built a leather stowage compartment: paper, cisors, shaping, and glueing, and then painting job... hereunder the result:

Nice work Thierry.

I can tell that you're really enjoying this little build, but I suspect you're itching to get back to the beautiful Bug'.

Cheers, H

Absolutely my dear Harvey....I wait until my finger is better to come back towards my mill and my lathe...:)

Evening chaps :)

Not a big progress today, but two layers of varnish (Vallejo Acrylic Matt varnish) has been sprayed on seats, rear shelf, and inside panels (inner and outer sides of them)

I'm really happy with the result, because it looks really like an old tan leather, with realistic age patina.

What's more,  I haven't yet begun the weathering with brown wash ! ...I hope, doing that, that I can enhance habit more the reliefs of these parts.

It will be made tomorrow or this week-end when the second layer of varnish has completely dried.

But before the last weathering, I've to paint chrome or silver chrome the door handles and cranks... I'm a bit worried by doing this tiny job...because the slightest mistake can be fatal for the final result ☹️

Stay tuned if you like and thanks for watching :)

Finally, it wasn't so hard as I thought to paint chrome the handles and cranks, with a 1 mm Molotov Chrome pen.

I've even taken the opportunity to simulate the chromed rivets on the door panels, not as sharp as I would have wanted, but acceptable

On the real car:

Hi gentlemen :)

After a light brown wash on all leather parts of the cabin, the last weathering is hardly discernible on the following pictures, but has been done, and makes the difference for my eyes, just as well on door panels than on seats

I think it will looks very correct in natural light 🙂

On the pictures below, the floor has not been yet painted (just white primed), and I've just placed a door panel and seats onto it, to get an idea of what it will looks like later:

Tomorrow I've planed to paint the floor of the cabin.

Stay tuned for the next steps: )

Thierry, you're working miracles again but this time in a much smaller scale, which I consider very difficult compared to your excellent Bug.

Plus you're overcoming the bad fits of this aged offering compliments of Heller. Each step of the way you've chosen beautiful finishes which mirror your references - bravo!

Plus this thread has been a magnet for the expert advice from the gang that frequents your work.

Highly informative and entertaining, please carry on as you can.

Morning, Gentlemen :)

The cabin's floor has been painted.

A lot of masking job has been done to get this result.

And the 2 frown seats has been glued:

Next job: scratch build a more convincing hand brake lever and its bellows at 1:24 scale....another challenge :)

Stay tuned if you like :)

Yesterday evening, I've assembled the different parts of the cabin: door side panels, front and rear seats and firewall

It's been pretty hard because on Heller's kit, nothing fit correctly, but I got a rather correct set:

I've sealed the hole in which the handbrake lever was supposed to be glued because the location of this lever is wrong on the kit, according to the ref. photos

Next step: I 'm going to scratch build a new handbrake lever with brass rod, and I'll fix it on the right place.

Stay tuned if you like, and thanks for watching :)

Evening chaps

For the fun, dry fit between the cabin and the body, grey primed:

I'd told you that I'll paint the body with Tamiya metallic blue TS 54, but finally, after comparisons with the ref. photos, I'm certainly now unsure as I've made the right choice.

Indeed, it looks like the better choice would be "French Blue", and precisely, this color is provided by Tamiya, as TS 10 !

Hereunder a photograph of the two cans, side by side:

It's a dilemma !

The truth is certainly the French blue, but my heart would like to vote for a Light metallic blue !

So, my friends:.....HELP....what would you do in my position ?

Stay tuned if you like and thanks for your expected answers :)

I've done a VW Samba in French Blue and while it's certainly a very nice colour I would say the metallic blue suits the Lago better. Follow your heart 😉

Thanks a lot Jeroen, but, pity,  that doesn't help a lot....I'm expecting reasoned replies 🙄

Reasoned reply: To be accurate to the time this car was originally built, it's got to be french blue.

Personal opinion: It is your build, so do whatever you like! Who says this car was not rebuilt later in its life? If you can come up with a fitting story you are free to do whatever you want to. Restomods are a thing these days.

I'd have to agree that the 'proper' way to go would be with the French Blue - I just don't associate pre-war cars with metallics apart from silver.

But if you prefer the metallic, then go with that - it's you who is building it after all.

I fully agree!!!

Tbh, I think the Ts-54 is a nice shade, but the metal flake would look way too large in scale on such a small model. Clear blue over chrome would give a more realistic metallic finish imho.

have you used the Tamiya Metallic color before? if not, you need to make sure the undercoat is perfect, because it is not a solid color. Everything underneath will show through the metallic blue.
