Greetings folks!

Here is my entry for the GB Italieri's reboot of the AMT kit with lots of choices of markings.

I have still to decide if i will do an M or an N model, which will ultimately depend on what markings i choose.

Looking forward to getting going.

Looks good on the sprues and a dry fit of the main components looked ok so I am hoping for a straightforward build with this one.

The tough part will be choosing which option to go with.

This will be interesting to watch Greg. From what I can see of the fuselage part is you are stuck with an M. The N had a a different rear cockpit.

it has cut lines inside, and the N bits are separate, so it can build as an N.

@GREG DESTEC take care aligning  the cowl panel inserts, they can leave gaps, and not fit well.  I'd have to dig out my part done to refresh the memory...

Hmm, I'm having dim memories of build reviews which mention some useful potential problems,  I'll edit in if I can find them.

That's good. Bit of a tough way to do it. Then again the Hasegawa kit has the tail separate from the fuselage which isn't the best.

It is a pity I'm so committed to others GB's or I would jump in here.

Thanks for the heads up chaps!

I'm looking forward to starting soon.

If Memory serves the N was just a lightened version of the M so make the cockpit change and mind your serial #'s as certain production blocks had only 4 .50 wing guns instead of 6. Don't remember where i found these, but these are screen captures of P-40N info.

there are some pics here of Cleopatra III

also, http://www.adf-serials.com.au/2a29e.htm

If you do a N, ou will most likely need some new wheels, as they used a lighter type with 8 spokes,  IIRC these are the same as on a P-51

The blue on the RNZAF roundels in the kit is far too light.

Having pulled my started kit out, the engine panels do not fit well,  be very careful about their alignment, and the will need shimming or filling.

https://modelingmadness.com/scott/allies/us/p40e.htm

Mine has some inconsistent panel lines on the rear fuselage, as the kit is moulded with mould inserts for alternate tails.

this build

https://modelingmadness.com/review/allies/us/usaaf/fighters/lutz40n.htm

suggests that dihedral is problem

Quote

When you go to mate the assembled wings with the fuselage, you will find that the wing is too flat and lacking dihedral, thereby precluding the wing from meeting the fuselage at the wing root. By cutting a "V" shaped notch in the front of the lower wing, part B3, you can gain enough flexibility to pull up the wings so they will meet at the wing root.

Not sure if it is needed,  a look my one seemed OK.

there is a page on Soviet P-40's here

Thanks Troy,

That's really helpful. I will read over the reviews carefully. Lots of good references there too.

Hello @GREG DESTEC if it helps ive built 3 of the original AMT/AMTech offerings. So if you have any issue's i'll be glad to dig through my cobwebbed memory. This was my last build an "N" from last year.

Dennis

Cheers Dennis,

Great result there. I will read through the thread more carefully later. Thanks for the link.

Ditto Greg 😁

I hope to post some pics over the weekend. I have also acquired the latest Italieri boxing of the E/K model.

Update 1...

Got the pit painted and assembled. Detail wise it could be a lot sharper, i am hoping Airfix do more new tool P-40's as their B model was a good one.

It all went together easily and i used the harness transfers over the moulded on ones, which are hard to see against the interior green paint for me at least.

Next was the oilcooler assembly in the "chin, which fitted well and again is almost invisible once you close the fuse halves. Minding what Troy and Dennis pointed out about the fit of the main components i dry fitted them with the help of some tape, and they all appear to go together without too much fuss. There are gaps to be filled/hidden in the wheel bays and behind the oil coolers so i will do something about that before i fix it all permanently.

I have ordered resin exhausts to replace the kit parts and brass mg inserts to spruce up the wing guns.

So far its all been very enjoyable.

one glitch you may want too at then, is the kit mould the guns on the centreline, they sit slightly below

this is the N composite at Hendon

I think the centre gun is slightly higher

both from here

if I can find a better image I'll add it.

Thanks Troy,

I have a few reference books on the P-40 so I'll be giving them a look too.

scratch that, I'm talking out my behind, as a quick look at the kits hows them to be done quite well.... and in the right place!

Not sure where I got that idea from,  in my 'defence' I've  been ill the last 10 days and my brain has turned too gloop...  :banghead:

@Troy Smith you are right about the centre one, it does sit very slightly above the outer two, it's not something I'd be worried about in 1/48th or smaller, it was bad enough trying to do it in 1/32nd!!

It wouldn't be worth the extra work...maybe if you were replacing the barrels with a set of Masters....... and on checking I see you're going to fit some. Ok then I'd recommend you don't quite follow the instructions for fitting them. They recommend drill them out to the exact size required.....hmmm a recipe for disaster I reckon. Best to drill a smaller pilot hole then using a fine round file carefully open up the hole once you get close to the actual size then clean up what's left of the old gun barrels before finally sizing the hole for the new barrels. With using a file there's a lot less chance of stuffing it up.

Will be very interested to see how you go with them and see how they look, in 1/32nd they do look awesome!

Hi Rich,

I saw the Master barrels on Hanants website. They come with the external ring gun sight. I also got a set of resin exhaust stubs as the kit ones look a bit naff.

buttoned up the fuse and put the wings together last night so this one is moving along now.

Cheers Greg 👍

I don't know if it's included in the 1/48th set, but the 1/32nd barrel set also includes the dot sight to go with the ring sight.

Ok so here is my progress to date.....

I have the main components together, and am in the process of masking and attaching the transparent parts,

All in all the kit has went togetehr well with minimal filler required. The trickiest part has been the resin exhausts which are designed for the hase kit. I have drilled the guide holes in the wing leading edge for the metal gun barrels and hope they fit without any drama.

I have really enjoyed this build so far, and am looking forward to the painting stage. I haave narrowed it down to two options from the decal sheet. One being a sharkmouth 112 Squadron  ship based in Italy with overall green camo, or the RNZAF option of the well known Waipareta Wildcat. So both M types and Kittyhawks rather than Warhawks..
