Chris8039
Hi all, I'm a newbie and I've never used a compressor and airbrush for modelling, I've used spraycans on the last two cars I've built, but I'm looking to achieve a nicer finish, but where do I start? I don't want to buy a cheap Chinese one from Ebay, preferably I'd like to spend between £70-£150 to include everything I need to get going, I know it's a subjective thing and some people may have had really good experience with cheaper airbrush's, but I'm not that guy I'm never that lucky for me they always end up as bin fodder so any pointers will be greatly received. I will more than likely buy it from Amazon Cheers Chris
Avereda
I picked this set up https://www.expotools.com/acatalog/AB603-Expo-Airbrush-Deal-AB605.html from the Salisbury Model Centre a couple of years ago and everything still works fine. My experience with it has been absolutely fine but I’m not a top-end model maker. Obviously it’s from the cheap end of the market and I’d recommend speaking to Declan in the Salisbury Model Centre first before committing to anything. DMC
Hi Chris, I saw this one https://www.umpretail.com/collections/ultimate-modelling-products/products/ultimate-apex-airbrush in a magazine this morning and it looked pretty interesting. Fits right in your price range also. My compressor is something like this one https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mini-Airbrush-Compressors-For-Airbrush-With-Compressor-Airbrush-Compressor-Set/232865062684?hash=item3637d6df1c:g:ViIAAOSwWWJawkos only it has a tank, which means it doesn’t run continuously. Something to think about if you’ll be doing a lot of spraying. look at the airbrush “how to for beginners” on YouTube. Plenty of info there. nheather
It will blow you budget a little, but I think you will struggle to get an airbrush and compressor for £150. But just received an email from these guys about things they have on sale. https://www.everythingairbrush.com/compressors/as-series-compressors/ab-as196-twin-cylinder-mini-piston-type-on-demand-compressor-with-receiver-and-dual-switch-for-airbrushing.html?utm_source=Everything+Airbrush+Newsletter+subscribers&utm_campaign=f7521c3132-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_11_30_11_44_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_216d3ebd6c-f7521c3132-311650141&mc_cid=f7521c3132&mc_eid=c76eea7945 Cheers, Nigel
rayprit
With the advent of Tattoo artists and nail "artists" coming on the scene in the past 2 years, the airbrush/compressor equipment is currently taking a bit of a kicking. I note that on Ebay alone(other places are available)deals being offered for a compressors with tank and airbrush for less than £80, having said that MY airbrush a H+s Evolution cost more than £200, but, I had to start somewhere and eventually move up...……….I think I started with a superb Chinese copy airbrush which was brilliant, for less than £12 and a cheap compressor, it gave me experience and taught me what to look out for, but remember, you get what you pay for, I was happy with what I started with and knew no different, as years progressed and I watched videos on YouTube, I had to try something different, buy something your happy with and work with it...……………………….check out this page and ignore the United States products https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_odkw=airbrush+compressor+kit+set&LH_PrefLoc=1&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=2+x+airbrush+compressor+kit+set&_sacat=
Steve Noble
Don't assume that an airbrush will give you a nicer/better finish than a spray can. An airbrush is just another way of laying paint onto a model. If used incorrectly, the finish could be worse than when using a spray can. I think from your post that it seems you build car models? You really don't need a fancy airbrush coating lots of pounds. A simple single or double action with a 0.4/0.5mm tip is perfect to paint cars. It will lay down a nice, even, wet coat of paint, just what you need for painting larger areas. Plenty of brushes under £50 to suit your needs. From personal experience I would spend more on the compressor and buy a nice one at the start. Something that will last and put out enough air to be able to spray properly for as long as you need, as well as being quiet would be ideal. Also a tank would be preferable if your budget would allow for that..

I'm in the market for a reasonable airbrush too at the moment, so took a look at this and found a review of it. http://www.kitmaker.net/modules.php?op=modload&name=Reviews&file=index&req=showcontent&id=11484 Tempted, but spray painters are a new thing to me, so still wary. EDIT - I just found this, much cheaper and looks to be the same kit. HoolioPaulio
Hi guys, I'm currently on my first airbrush/compressor setup and getting pretty decent results with it. I bought the green 0.3mm airbrush from GreenStuffWorld (they also do a blue 0.5mm). I was looking for a cheap airbrush below £30 to start me off, and these guys regularly use this airbrush in their demo videos for their chameleon paints (some of which I also ordered at the same time) so I figured if it was good enough for them to show off their paints it would do for me. It has been a brilliant ab so far. I use it with this TC88T compressor, which has been great. Its quiet enough to not be heard outside of the room I'm in, which is a little playroom extension on the back of the living room, right below our bedroom, and its sits on carpet over wooden floorboards. And my wife says she doesn't hear it ever. Its only minor downside is it gets hot under heavy use, easily rectified with an 80mm PC case fan, as its the perfect size to screw straight into the holes for the end plate cover. I wired the fan up to an old 12v 1a router power supply I had lying around so I don't have to invalidate the warranty on the compressor by altering the wiring. I went for a fancy noise cancelling fan on floating mounts, not realising the screw mounts were not straight through like a normal case fan, hence the faffing with the little clear adaptor plate, but a standard fan with longer bolts will fit straight on.
