Northrop YB-35 Flying Wing

Recommended Posts

There's something about multi-engine pusher aircraft and counter-rotating props that stimulates my fancy. And if it's a flying wing, too, it's darn near irresistible!

I finished this build in five weeks, which for me is super-fast (my B-58 Hustler took three months), and just in time for this weekend's local show & contest.

The WIP can be found here:

Significant changes/additions to the Italeri kit:

Opened up and deepened the leading edge engine air inlets

Added warm air exhaust outlets on the wing trailing edge

Added leading edge slots near the wing tips

Added gun barrels to all turrets (including the tail "stinger")

Added interior details (what little can be seen)

Added belly crew access hatch

Markings are for a hypothetical in-service production aircraft ca. 1949

NMF created using AK Interactive Xtreme Metal paints

On to the pics!

Incredible across the board. Love the build and the finished product was well worth the work. I hope it goes well at your show this weekend.

Thank, Dennis! As for the show, she'll be competing on the same table with my B-58 Hustler. I think they're gonna need a bigger table LOL!

Fantastic job. A lot of work to get the kit to play ball but the result is well worth it. These are the kits I love building, they need some TLC and we have to either cajole or kick them into submission.

Great stuff!

Is that the HPMS show on Saturday?  I was going to try and check that out!

Those finished photos are absolutely beautiful, and having followed your WIP thread and knowing how much work it took to get there just makes the finished product all the more amazing!  Good luck at the show.

A very humble Wow and Blimey from over here in the Malvern Hills Sir.

Really enjoyed the build thread, and the end result is quite something, I'm a sucker for natural metal finishes anyway, but she's a very big and beautiful shiny lady indeedy. Nice one. Cheers

What a great model of this fascinating aircraft! I love unusual innovative constructions. What a pity that it didn't go into service. Your model certainly does!

I saw a lot of this in the WIP forum, but wow the completed project looks phenomenal! Excellent work on the finish, and your added details really make this thing pop. I wish you the best of luck at the contest, at the very least this thing should get plenty of looks!

A long time ago, my family bought the jet version for my grandfather, who built it and hung it in his basement ceiling. Safe to say, I’ve got a soft spot for flying wings!

Thanks for sharing.

You've done it again Bill, wonderful model and it will look great next to your Hustler.:worthy:  I will get back to my wings but for now I have just started some century series for the FROG GB.  Good luck at the show.👍

Would love to see this one next to the Hustler!

Packing up for the show is the first time I've had the two side-by-side. I recall when building the Hustler how impressed I was with her size. But next to the YB-35, she looks like a nimble little fighter!

Well, our local show & contest is over for this year. I'm happy to report that my flying wing took a bronze in its category (Multi-Engine Prop, All Scales):

but I must admit I'm disappointed my Hustler came home empty-handed. It was in a strange, catch-all category in which supersonic bombers were competing with whirlybirds (LOL!). Anyway, there's always next year.

I've had my fill of NMF, it's time for some well-behaved camouflage instead! On with my next project!
