Showcase Day, Duxford August 2019 (updated 26/08)

Recommended Posts

Hi

I spent a very pleasant day at Duxford today, for their second "Showcase Day".

There were three elements (plus other "stuff"!):

Attack at Pearl Harbour

Boeing PT-17 Stearman

Curtiss Hawk H-75A-1

Supermarine Spitfire Mk.Vb

On the morning of 7 December 1941, the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked the US Naval base at Pearl Harbour bringing the United States of America into the Second Word War. Three of our Showcase aircraft illustrate those that were in use by the USAAF, U.S Navy and Allied forces at the very start of the Pacific War.

The Boeing PT-17 Stearman was used to train American fighter pilots while the Curtiss Hawk typifies the aircraft recruits flew into combat. Spitfires and Seafires were used by the Royal Navy and Royal Australian Air Force across the Pacific.

The Fastest Fighters

Grumman F8F-2P Bearcat

Hawker Sea Fury T20

Hawker Fury Mk.II

See the ultimate piston engine Navy fighters in action!  Designed and flown against the advent of new jet powered aircraft, the F8F Bearcat, Sea Fury T20 and Fury Mk.II showcase some of the fastest and most powerful fighters kept flying onsite at IWM Duxford today.

Pacific War Icons

Consolidate PBY-5A Catalina

Grumman Wildcat FM-2

Goodyear Corsair FG-1D

Three aircraft that all served with distinction throughout the Pacific War.

The tiny Wildcat served with every U.S Navy fighter squadron during the Pacific War, the elegant PBY Catalina famed for spotting Japanese aircraft carriers at Midway in 1942, turning the war in favour of the United States and victory.

Finally, the powerful 'bent-wing' Corsair supported the ground invasion against Imperial Japanese forces leading to VJ Day.

Fantastic formation shot of the fast birds - two of my all-time favourite types! I hope I can see '661 in action one day.......A Sigh for a Centaurus.......

Thanks for sharing! One minor quibble - they really ought to have known that it's spelled 'Pearl Harbor'. And thank goodness they explained the Pearl Harbor/Spitfire connection - I thought they'd gone all Ben Affleck on us for a moment.......

Fantastic collection of planes to see, glad the weather was good and thanks for sharing these pictures.

Thanks Parabat. The weather was kind, which resulted in the usual Duxford challenge of shooting into the sun!

Thanks Paul. I was hoping that they would fly in formation, and I wasn't disappointed!

Without the explanation on the IWM website, I would have struggled with the rather tenuous connections!

Great photos! Somehow  Sea Fury WG655  doesn't look right with the 4 blade prop... until its going round as in the flying pics.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Paul. The sound from the two Furys was awesome as they were holding in front of me to enter Runway 24!

AD,

Firstly, what an incredible collection of photos! Secondly, I wonder what prop they used on WG655? (Looks like a DC-7 propeller to me.) Thirdly, I almost wet my lederhosen looking at the photos of the SR661 clone- what a magnificent Hawker! Loved the photo of the F8F and Sea Furies together, as they were the ultimate radial-engined fighters of their day! Thank you so much for posting. 👍👍

Thanks for the kind words, Mike. I'm really pleased you enjoyed them. I'm pleased that you didn't need to dry the leather!

They are loud, but I think Hurricanes pip them on the noise front! 😉
