Scania T143H 6x2 tipper conversion

Recommended Posts

That's the final result of today's efforts. Looks like this one is back on track.

Bank holiday tomorrow so I'll be working on the chassis. I hope I can get some paint on tomorrow, that would be great. It will have a red chassis, front bumper will be red as well.

Good to see this beast back on the bench and beaten to submission!

Do you think it's possible to cut a mask for the flat windscreen and use a black marker or something to tone down the edge a bit? Or is it just exaggerated by the camera?

Thanks Jörgen, yes the close up shot makes it a lot worse. It really depends on the viewing angle. But I could definitely use a small marker to blend in the side of the clear part with the window surround.

Oooh, excited to see this back on the bench.  I love to see your custom work when you start chopping kits up.  I still have this kit on my wishlist, added after I first saw you start this build, but if I ever get it mine will be OOB.

So, today I wanted to work on the chassis, which I did. Painting was out of the question today as it has rained for pretty much the entire day, and I have to open a window to let the extractor hose out. Last time I did that when it rained things got wet inside. And, I didn't get to paint stage anyway. I did do some chopping @HoolioPaulio 🙂

Literally the first step in the instructions of this kit is to shorten the chassis by 12 mm! So, because this started out as an OOB build, I did just that. Later on, you also have to shorten the driveshaft by the same amount. I hadn't gotten around to that yet.

I wanted to have a little more wheelbase so I decided to get that 12 mm back! So out with the saw.

20220606202453-4f945b9e-me.jpg

I cut two 12 mm pieces of card to use as spacers and glued those on channel strips. These were then inserted into the chassis.

20220606202453-a1fce30d-me.jpg

Some more white plastic was used to fill those gaps out.

20220606202450-80ee66ce-me.jpg

Some filler was applied.

20220606202451-87712528-me.jpg

And sanded.

20220606202451-22d1a8da-me.jpg

That's good enough. And now, I can use the kit's driveshaft in its original form.

I glued on the resin hubs because these will be painted with the chassis.

20220606202451-be497a91-me.jpg

I'm now figuring out where the exhaust should go. Something is not right there so I'll have to do some more figuring.

In the meantime I also had a go at the front bumper. The kit part is nice for a road going tractor but not for a tipper.

20220606202452-8f23e60b-me.jpg

It got chopped.

20220606202452-0ac26e7e-me.jpg

This is what's left, after some initial sanding.

20220606202452-62090c3f-me.jpg

I don't know, I may yet scratch a new one.

Morning all. I had to tweak the air intake quite a bit because the cab is shorter now and everything is much more forward on the chassis.

This is the end reult.

20220612111515-049041c1-me.jpg

Originally, the intake rests on the entire fuel tank, but not anymore. The grey part was shortened quite a bit, but I'm satisfied with how it sits now. Just need to fill that hole.

This is what's under the cab, some tweaking needed to be done here as well. I'll fill those gaps a little, but to be fair nothing of this will ever be seen.

20220612111515-e9ac10b0-me.jpg

The pipe that connects from the air cleaner canister to the engine intake is dry fitted but it's ok.

20220612111514-88ac43a2-me.jpg

Now that exhaust. The kit has an exhaust which goes under the chassis, but I'm inclined to try and fit a standing pipe on the left side of the cab so that's what I'm going to do now.

I messed about with the exhaust yesterday and tonight. It took quite a bit of effort to get things modified and attached in the right way.

20220613221325-24d1ad3f-me.jpg

The pipe which connects to the engine is the original one, I cut it in a couple of places and used more pipe from other ends of the kit's exhaust system to fix one I was satisfied with. I don't think the exhaust normally goes up and over the chassis but... mine does. The standing pipe comes from the Italeri "extra's" kit, with all kinds of stuff in it. The plastic is cheap and the mouldings not perfect but it will work. I modified the bottom horizontal part, making it less high. I fabricated some brackets for it as well.

So then, I dry fitted the air intake pipe and tried fitting the cab. Didn't work... It got stuck on the exhaust pipe. I don't understand why, the engine is in the correct place, that end of the exhaust is a kit part, the front of the cab is box stock and the cab supports are in the right place. But, I had the same kind of issues with my 142 build, I had to seriously mutilate the engine to get it to fit under the cab. Must be me!

Anyway, this is what I had to take out.

20220613221325-75800dc2-me.jpg

Now it fits.

I still needed the top end, the kit part would have to be shortened because I don't want it to stick out above the cab.

20220613221326-91022914-me.jpg

So here's the final result. It will be straightened out of course.

20220613221324-aabb9cf3-me.jpg

Next up is fabricating a hydraulic tank which should fit in the chassis, in the empty space you see bottom right of the picture. We need hydraulics for the bin to be able to tip. Still no paint!

I've wanted to paint for some time now, so that's what I did tonight.

Red chassis.

20220615223145-432f1003-me.jpg

Because I figured it would go really well with the cab colour, and I think it does. The bin and its chassis will be light grey. The radiator will be black.

20220615223550-caa5545e-me.jpg

I wasn't happy with "gunship grey" from the Italeri instructions so I went with Cockpit Green for the Scania engine. It's rather bright in this picture but in real life it's somewhat darker.

20220615223144-a5d75db0-me.jpg

I painted some other bits and pieces, of which the exhaust was the most important.

20220615223145-75e66fd8-me.jpg

This is greenstuffworld chrome, really nice stuff. Of course, it will not stay this bright but it's a good start.

I clearcoated the chassis and engine this afternoon.

20220616211653-ec3ce526-me.jpg

The transmission got a metallic colour brushed on. I'll do some more detailing later on.

20220616211654-84a1f169-me.jpg

I painted the rims with Alclad Dark Alu, which I got this afternoon. I wanted to try that out and I like it.

20220616211654-cc0013ba-me.jpg

Then I went to work with black oil paint, trying to put a first layer of grime and dirt on the chassis.

20220616211654-1ad6adf5-me.jpg

It's not that visible in the pictures, because of the light, but it takes the freshness off the paint nicely.

20220616211655-4b9b58dc-me.jpg

I'm curious to see how this dries, I don't use oils all that often. Some parts still need to be painted, like the air intake and the radiator.

Try persevering with the oils, they do goive good results, like any painting technique it's just a case of trial and error. Maybe add ground pastels for a bit of dust? However, looking at your previous builds it will no doubt turn out superbly.

I will! And I have already gone in with some more black oil paint yesterday. I didn't do much else this weekend, except for painting radiator and air intake.

20220619224920-747a87cf-me.jpg

I went a bit heavier on the oil this time. My camera doesn't pick up all the details because of the lighting, it looks somewhat heavier with the naked eye.

This shows a little bit more detail. I do like how easy it is to pool the oils in recesses and along edges and such.

 20220619224921-b3d37558-me.jpg

I will go in with some other colours this week, and add in some pigments for dirt and such.

The engine received a bit as well, for starters.

My plan is to get the Scania as far as possible before the Revell Classic GB starts this weekend. I'll be building 3 Mercedes-Benz trucks there

What I'd like to accomplish before that is to have everything done except the trim (like mirrors and stuff) and the "tipper" part (the bin and its chassis and such). I think it's feasible. I can at least put it in my cabinet instead of back in a box.

Anyway, the engine needed some more paint, so I did that.

20220622091648-bd4cae27-me.jpg

It will need more weathering! I used Vallejo's Metal Colour Dark Alu for the top parts because it covers really well. The transmission is done in Pale Burnt Metal, I'll give the alu parts a once over with that before adding grime. Not sure about wiring yet, at this point I don't have the inclination of showing the engine on this build. I'm leaning towards glueing the large bonnet to the cab to ensure a nice fit. A truck engine needs so many wires to look convincing, I don't think this is that build!

As far as weathering the chassis, I added more dirt, this time using Lifecolour paints. I think the acrylics match my painting style better than the oils, I don't know. I just like my paint to dry quickly. Once I have the bin's chassis on here I'll weather everything together to make sure it blends in.

20220622091648-6f1e83f8-me.jpg

The camera doesn't seem to pick up on the "subtleties" under the photo lamps so I went outside and took some pictures while not in direct sunlight.

It's a little better.

20220622091649-dc83249f-me.jpg

20220622091649-16e47e23-me.jpg

The brake drums are still bright red but you won't be able to see those anyway once the wheels are on. The holes in the chassis are for the mudguard attachments. I won't be using those, but most of the holes will be covered with the bin's chassis bolting plates so it should be fine.

I got the engine a little more dirty.

20220622211629-2def2f22-me.jpg

It's ok like this, when you look at it from the (under)side you'll see this which is fine.

20220622211629-4cc6551a-me.jpg

So I declared it ready and mounted it.

20220622211628-e269700c-me.jpg

That air intake pipe is too clean, it will be taken care of. You can see some paint scraped off the left side of the exhaust, I had to push the engine a little to the right or the cab wouldn't fit... I think I may have to scrape some more material off the cab anyway. It's always different just so when it's actually glued in place. With me at least, it's probably my lack of dry fitting skills 🙂

I don't know if I'll be knocking this thing off a lot... but for now it's there.

20220622211629-348d03df-me.jpg

I can make sure the cab fits when this dries out and I can handle it a little more comfortably. Then, I can put it on its wheels. All that's for tomorrow.

Thanks, yes that cracked paint actually did me a favour, I like this route a lot better.

Well, it's been a good run. I'm glad I revived this build and I'm happy with the progress I was able to make in these past (almost) 3 weeks. It's going into my cabinet like this, with cab, bonnet and wheels dry fitted.

20220623195120-1f3192d4-me.jpg

20220623195120-bb60264a-me.jpg

That exhaust is still leaning a little, I might correct it. Or not, I do like wonky stuff on trucks.

Anyway, thanks for watching this build progress. I'm now going to clear the bench and start preparing for a triple Benz build in Revell Classic GB. Until next time 🙂

  • 1 year later...

So, as a reminder... I wasn't happy with what was left of the front bumper. This pic doesn't show how flimsy the thing is.

20220606202452-62090c3f-me.jpg

I already considered making a new one, about a year and a half ago

So, about time to get that done. I reused the middle part for the tow hook and scratched a new bumper around it.

A little rough here, still.

20231209231737-63632483-me.jpg

But some sanding and filling, and sanding, took care of that.

20231209231737-b25f03d3-me.jpg

20231209231737-695bfb89-me.jpg

It's a little more robust now.
