Corsairfoxfouruncle
Hello everyone... well I'm in with this kit. I find it fitting that I'm building a kit of a Tomahawk, and I grew up in a town named Tomahawk Wisconsin so it works for me. The kits decals are for 73 Squadron and i have a set of lend-lease VVS decals i may use. My confusion lies in that i cant find very much on 73 squadron using Tomahawks ? Ive seen Hurricanes in the same time frame this is supposed to be a P-40 Tomahawk unit. Ultimately if I'm not happy with the options id like to find a set of 112 squadron or AVG markings. Im still looking and that might still be a possibility. Dennis Edited August 19, 2019 by Corsairfoxfouruncle
jean
Hi Dennis, that is a great plane to build! It is ironical that you got that boxing, when Airfix have two other boxings for 112 Sqdn and AVG!!! Life can indeed be funny. Will follow for sure! JR

dogsbody
Dennis, is it just a trick of the light and camera angle or does the upper nose part (Part #1) look short-shot on the front left side? Chris

Chris Hey chris just double checked the whole kit, everything checks out. It must be the angle of the piece in the photo because i looked at the photo first and thought the same thing. Thanks for thinking of me and letting me know to check it. Dennis
Corsairfoxfouruncle
Hello all... well heres my first day of work on this. So after I finished the cockpit i decided i was going to display this with moving surfaces in different positions. So i worked the flaps into an open position and added some detail in the inner wings. I then cut and modified the ailerons into position. Eventually the rudder and stabilizers will get modified. The wings leading edge needs a bit of filler as does the seams along the fuselage. For some reason the upper wings didn't want to quite reach the top of the fuselage. So i used the rubber band to give me the dihedral i needed to get the wings to connect. Good thing is I've been able to scrounge both early war U.S. stars and Chinese Stars. This opens up my options for markings. I can do an early/pre war P-40. This includes both pearl harbor or Philippines options. I still need to scrounge a sharks mouth if I want to do an AVG or 112 Squadron bird. Questions, comments, thoughts, and or good jokes. Franz75
This is a very fast build, looking good. The kit is quite simple but well done, Airfix did good job on it.
Corsairfoxfouruncle
Did a little more today. Decent kit with just a few little things I'm not a fan of. I really don't like the Mg's they are to flimsy. I may replace them with brass if they snap off. The fit isn't bad but can be soft in some locations. I drilled the .50's barrels out on the nose. Heres a photo op of my current builds. Tomahawk, Harrier, Fw-190, and a Hurricane Mk.1. I never realized just how small the AV-8A's were. Not much longer than the Tomahawk. Corsairfoxfouruncle
Sanding is done on this, now its just a paint scheme i need to figure out ? Im sitting with 3 Squadron RAAF, 250 Squadron RAF, 73 Squadron RAF, USAAC (pre-war). USAAF Early war Caribbean, Pearl Harbor, or Continental defense. Last up is a Lend lease VVS tomahawk. Now if i opt to hand paint the sharksmouth i can also stretch my options to an AVG Tiger or possibly 112 Squadron tomahawk. Though for the 112 Sq. bird i still need to find codes. The look to be white in photo's but could be very bleached grey codes ? Anyone know if they're grey or white ?
dogsbody
There's No. 403 Squadron RCAF. And this: Curtiss Tomahawk RCAF 414Sqn RU V AK185 UK 1941-03 Chris

If white i can probably scrounge them ? Other than that I have a few I'm favoring and one is a photo-recon bird in the Caribbean in 1942. I do like the 250 and 3 Squadron options as well. And last is a Pearl harbor bird ? Dennis
dogsbody
I'm not 100% sure of the colour of the codes, but going by this photo, I'd say it's the same as the fuselage band. Chris
trickyrich
I'd have guess and say they'd probably be that sky/grey colour (not an expert on RAF colours) as the spinner is lighter and probably white. Plus the white ring in the roundel is a give away as well.

So I dug around and found Troy's post. I thought you also had/have a thread about them ? Ive been trying to figure out the scheme/markings for the Hurricane Mk.I i am building. I think i will be going with 401 Squadron, which was 1 Squadron RCAF initially. I have the codes with some minor finagling and it settles my needs quite well. Thank you for pointing me in that direction. As for the Tomahawk I'm still debating because i don't have codes to do either 403 or 414 unless i get real fancy and make masks. But these two ⬆️ are still in the running with 3 squadron RAAF & 250 squadron RAF. Dennis
Corsairfoxfouruncle
Hello everyone... well i got to try my new Iwata out today. All i can say is WOW, so quick and easy to clean and change out colors. I painted 4 models (This, Hurricane, Fw.190, and Harrier) in about 60 minutes. Not completely but got the base colors down. I will still use my older Iwata for big areas as it needs to use a jar of paint(suction feed). So heres the Sky type S on the belly of the Tomahawk. I painted the same color on my Hurricane build. Will wait a day or two for this to cure as i need clear it. While its curing/drying i can mask and set up the canopy for the Tomahawk and Hurricane. Questions, comments, and or thoughts ? Beazer
The 403 squadrons aircraft were finished in the Curtiss equivalents of dark earth, dark green, and sky(actually a light gray). The spinner and fuselage band were True Sky. Sorry I didn’t notice this sooner for you.

Im going to go with the repaint in British colors after an maintenance overhaul story. Yes its not 100% accurate but i can live with it. Still up in the air over 73, 3 RAAF, 403, or 414 though. I've got photo's of 3 RAAF in these colors so they're an option ? Dennis Edited August 29, 2019 by Corsairfoxfouruncle
Beazer
It’ll still look fine. Never know when some mechanic uses the wrong bucket lol.
Corsairfoxfouruncle
Hello everyone... finished a 2nd session on the models tonight. I sprayed both the Tomahawk and Hurricane with Dark earth. I know the color comes across as a greenish hue but its brown. I think its a trick of light due to the flash photography. Will clear the models tomorrow afternoon, then i can mask for green on them tomorrow night. Questions, comments, and or thoughts ? Dennis PS - Ive since narrowed it down to 3 Sq. RAAF, 73 Sq. RAF, and 403 Squadron from Canada. As 414 formed in August of 41. So they're out of the running. Corsairfoxfouruncle
Hello everyone... I took a couple of day's off due to some bug i caught. Im still not 100% but good enough to due the next session on my work. I was able to spray the Dark Green today in this case Tamiya. I have since cleared over this to get a more uniform sheen. Sorry for the way to shadowy photo's of the sides i tried to manipulate them but the color's wound up being way off. Please feel free to post Thoughts, questions, and or comments. Corsairfoxfouruncle
Hello everyone.. well after my Harrier fun yesterday i got much better response from the Airfix decals i used today. I did most of the main markings today on the Tomahawk, and will do some stencils tomorrow. Ultimately in the end i chose 3 Squadron RAAF. I did this because i am doing 401 Squadron RCAF with my Hurricane, and I've done 403 Sq. RCAF before. In case you are curious here is the Hurricane. Questions comments and or thoughts ?
