AML 1/72 Curtiss Hawk A-4 ‘Mohawk IV’

I picked this one up knowing all about its flaws as a kit, but with a bit of patience it can be turned into a lovely replica. Mine is modelled as an aircraft of No. 5 Squadron RAF, based in India in 1942. Decals were from LPS. Hairystick painted using Colourcoats enamels and given a panel wash using a Mig wash. Exhaust and gun staining was achieved using a pencil. After I had finished the build I dropped it... so if you look closely you will notice on the left hand side a piece of the undercarriage fairing is missing we well we the undercarriage being wonky...

CURTISS MOHAWK Mk.III, AR631, RAF, 1942.

Here is AZ's kit of the Curtiss H-75C1, otherwise known as the Mohawk Mk III in RAF service.  Not a bad kit to put together and looks the part when finished. The undercarriage and cockpit glazing needed a lot of care to get right, apart from than just a typical short run type of build, some filling and fettling along the way.  Very nice surface detail, very fine panel lines and adequate cockpit, for my tastes anyway.

Vallejo ModelAir paint was used, along with 'Klear' (the new formula) gloss coat and Vallejo Matt airbrushed on.  The decals worked with no problems, settling well with a bit of the MicroSol solutions.

Davey.

P-40N Warhawk

Believed to be of 553 BU, Romulus AAF Base, Michigan, July 1945

This is the 1/100 scale Eldon 'Match Kit', which was released in 1967.  Fun to build (if you like that sort of thing!), but the kit is let down by a canopy which is woefully inaccurate.

I chose the scheme as one of the more colourful that I could find and painted it using Alclad lacquers, Tamiya Nato Black and Humbrol 18.  The decals came from my spares box.

The build thread is here, if you would like to see more.

My RNZAF P-40N

As the result of correspondence between two armourers of No. 4 Servicing Unit at Ondonga, on New Georgia in the Solomon Islands, and a pen-friend who was a tuberculosis patient at Christchurch Hospital in New Zealand named Gloria Lyons, it was decided to adopt her as a unit mascot.  At that time 4 (SU) aircraft carried code letters, so one P-40N-1, NZ3148 coded 'G', was duly christened 'Gloria Lyons', and this name was painted on the lower engine cowls

Kit is the Hasegawa P-40N Warhawk

Scale 1/48

Decals are Ventura

It was a good build up to putting on the Fuel tank. I had trouble getting it on.

I have weathered it as if it has just returned from patrol.
