Black Swan class kits? And Abdiel..

Hi sailors!

I feel a little scared to venture into your little port pub but I am sure you are nice to a ship´s boy? ;)

I am mainly an aircraft modeller but built some ships as a boy (Airfix Tribal Class, some Matchbox ones.. ☺️). But I do have a big interest in WW2 ships, mainly smaller ones from PT boats up to maybe some cruiser classes.  But what I would really want to build is a Black Swan class, maybe one of "Johnnie" Walker´s?

I did a quick search but didn´t really come up with what I was looking for here. I saw some kits on Scalemates however and would just want some tips on what scale and kits could be nice to do and look good?

Anti submarine vessels are about as cool as it gets for me and when they have some nice history it just makes it more fun to work on them. Doesn´t have to be the most successful ones, just somethign interesting..

I am also thinking about SC-497 or PC-451, haven´t checked if they exist as kits but I really like their look..

Anyways, thanks for any help!

Atlantic Models do a 1/350 Black Swan Class, post war fit, and Starling Models offer one in 1/700. Links below.

I believe both are very good kits, both resin.

AJM Models offer BLACK SWAN and IBIS in 1/700 scale - good kits, but lots of very small parts, both resin and photo-etch.  Both are depicted in an earlier fit than when Johnnie Walker's 2nd Escort Group came to fame.

Thanks both of you. Very much appreciated. :)

I am not too familiar with the scales, I roughly know how big ships are in them but 1/700 sounds too small for me..? 1/350 sounds much more fun.. I´ll have  alook at that though.

You don´t happen to have knowledge about fast minelayers like HMS Welshman as well? Another interesting class for me..

Best bet for the Airfix MANXMAN will be to look for the later boxing with SUFFOLK.  Many more around and not too silly prices.  I picked up one on Ebay a year or so back for about a tenner IIRC.

In contrast, as Jamie says, some of the earlier kits are going for silly money.  At a local model show about 2 years ago one trader was offering TIGER in a Type 2 box for over £100.  Since all I wanted were the 2 hull halves and main decks to build a Colony class, needless to say I declined!

Gidday All, I've done three of the Airfix kits, all double boxed with Suffolk. I can't remember how far back I bought them. I did the first as Manxman almost OOB, the second as Welshman as she arrived at Malta the first trip, and a whiff (AA escort vessel). The Airfix kits are quite simple, I enjoyed them, they suited my average level of skill but be warned, their guns and the AA director are rubbish. The quad .50cals are triples, the quad pompom totally lacking in magazine boxes and the 4-inch barrels too thick. I replaced/scratch built the guns for those kits I did. There are a few other issues, some fixable, some not but I still enjoyed them. I still have two more. One I plan on HMS Ariadne, the other is unplanned at present. HTH. Regards, Jeff.
