Whitley Mk III - Fly 1/72

This morning I cut out and glued in the final windows and used Bill's 'PPP on a wet cotton bud' technique to cover up the other location marks:

Getting my head out of the sand(ing) I find I have this:

If I've finished sanding I guess I can instal the other clear parts now, including the turrets.

Masking in my future there is…

I have also blobbed some ClearFix in the door window hole to see if it can be safely masked. Should have dried by the time I get around to it.

I don’t think that’s fair. We do this modelling lark for fun, and it’s your Whitley. Don’t feel you need to slavishly follow instructions, or conform to anything you don’t feel comfy with.

We are all happy to share and pool our knowledge. My feeling is the pre-MkIV Whitley’s had pretty much been consigned to operational training units and parachute training by the outbreak of war. All service aircraft would have conformed to regulations regarding painting and so on. The early part of the war, up to summer 1940, saw a fair degree of flux regarding official markings and camouflage. For my part, and considering my predilection for everything 1940, I often try to find something out of the norm to illustrate the flux of the period.

As I say, it’s your model. Whatever you decide to do with it will be fine with us. (Even if one or two of us might wince at the odd inaccuracy here and there. ;) )

As Keith says a good post and very encouraging - the tips have been yellowed with the Liquidex pen and will be 'silvered' later.

That Baron bloke has upped my game a lot recently, not least of all with this landing light:

48574312287_96e0503f37_n.jpg 48574464541_99cd90aec8_n.jpg

Took more fettling than expected due to the thickness of the plastic. No, I won't be soldering it!

The front window goes in with a bit of trimming:

48574441411_24fde3ef38_z.jpg

…but the turret is another matter:

48574630587_eec19f6ef4_z.jpg

Is that a fit?? It certainly matches the fit of the surround:

48574520721_c01f9611c1_z.jpg

I assume 'the other bit' is for an earlier mark but I'll decide later once I've decided what to do about the rear one:

48574526591_f2da81ff1b_z.jpg

Gaaaaahhhhh!

While I was checking the clear part tree I also noticed this:

48574636927_39e9b3d1c8_z.jpg

Those 'triple' windows should be in the belly.

Rats.

Melchie fitted this in his build but he had the AM conversion with the turrets. Lucky chap.

Lunch and a lie down I think…

No, wait, I can't rest with that problem.

I checked the instructions again:

… and the reference shots and the pointy turret goes on the rear!

Better:

48574764932_520030c715_z.jpg

Not great, but better.

I blame the instruction writer for showing the front 'from the rear'.

As it were.

Right, lunch!

Yep, bacon sandwich on brown, no spread/butter, splash of brown sauce.

This is Real Modelling. I like your gritted teeth approach to tackling whatever is thrown at you.

It looks like (famous last words) the major battles are won and only minor skirmishes are left before victory!

Simon.

Bread, I remember bread… not allowed on this diet, or sugar.

At the BBQ I had a big sausage in a roll and a burger in a bun and some cake and cheesecake.

Put on 4lb this week.

Don't you hate it when you're wife says nothing but just has that 'Told you so' look on her face?

Are you listening Hendie? :D

Thanks Giorgio, Ian, Edge and Trevor :)

Thanks for the Fly images Hendie - you're going to run out soon, aren't you?

(subtle challenge)

The triple windows are in:

OK, not the best start but I was terrified they would fall inside so cut the holes undersize and hoped the TET would settle them.

I'll try better in the morning.

Thanks Ben - great song! :)

This morning was a bit of a Curate's egg. Molly has had a problem with her eyelids and she's not looking her best. Third trip to the vet was a 'specialist referral' to the eye specialist and she's had a scrape dermatology test so we're waiting for results. Poor Mols. I must admit I'm not a fan of the 'we have a drug that might cure that symptom' approach to medicine, animal or human. I'd much rather have diagnostic tests first THEN try drugs but hey, call me old fashioned. We now have four or five lots of drugs to administer for various reasons… but I still think it's the change of her monthly parasitic treatment; the new one's not as good at mites apparently so she'll be back on the old one. Hmmm :hmmm:

Anyway, I'm now approaching the Whitley on a 'what do I feel like doing this morning' basis. After sorting the lower windows this morning it was a bit more sanding and then masking.

48582982566_cc86f28a1e_z.jpg

Nice material in the Montex mask but wait, what's this? It doesn't fit! How about this one? And this one?

48583143782_bf84bb03bc_z.jpg

Oh dear. It's going to be faster to do it myself than applying the masks and having to take them off again. Rats. The small window ones fit though:

48583035736_ffeba67587_z.jpg

… so not a complete waste of money.

Less lazy me option taken on the props:

48583183177_a567951ee2_z.jpg

I'll see what I feel like later…

Sorry to hear about Molly, I hope they find a solution soon.

I don’t like masking canopies so often use ready made masks, but what a pain when they don’t fit the kit they where specifically designed for. Repeat after my “ calm, calm, calm “.

I’m sure you will prevail, you’re a proper modeller now.

I hope Molly gets better soon. My daughter's little kitty has been missing for over a week now. We are all quite worried. There are a lot of wild beasts up here in The Great North Woods that would take a small cat quickly. She is a fighter, so there's hope.

Thoroughly enjoying this build Ced and not just because you are ironing some of the kit's wrinkles for me.
