Whitley Mk III - Fly 1/72

Thanks Roger - but I have a lot more sanding to do, sadly :)

Look at these prop hubs in the block:

Tricky, but sawing at a diagonal, being careful not to chop the shaft (which I need for the PropMaster), and they were off.

Here we go:

I'm not sure if I cut the props from the gate too short (the instructions show a blunt end) but I needed to sand a taper on the end before they would go in the holes.

The short shaft meant a bit of a wobble which was a pain, but with CA and actuator they were done in a few minutes:

Now then, the few reference shots I have of the Mk III seem to show metal / silver hubs and blades with no yellow tips.

Is that right do you think?

You’d think. Oddly, Airfix's wheels-up solution is moulded wheel sticking out of the closed doors, equally hard to paint.

FROG did it the same way as Airfix, on their old kit.

One side (including the door window which needs ClearFix) done:

Realised I should deal with the fuselage seam before doing the top windows.

Lost mojo.

Did the engines and cowlings:

The resin fits in the plastic without cutting off the block - result!

But they won't go on the nacelles like that - rats.

The engines are Bristols so glossy black gearbox for Chris :)

Actually, the engines are Armstrong Siddeley Tigers. They had black cylinders with a silver/metallic casing and pushrods, perhaps a light grey. It's difficult to find any decent pictures of Tiger engines.

Silver with painted tips?

I’ll ponder more.

It sort of depends whether you want pre-war or during it. I reckon the black hubs/blades with yellow tips is post September 1939, whereas the photo you’ve posted is sometime before that.

As mostly above. My artificial freedom would go with black blades and yellow tips. Maybe silver spinners. I'm not accurate on these things as they should joy myself.  Like on my diecasts,  when they had produced a lemon green or Zinoberrot (red orange) interieur for them.  Who would have liked to sit in a car with that colour?

Cheers Benedikt

I should have included the caption with the photo I posted above. I'll put it here:

" Armstrong Whitworth Whitley Mk III and crew, with YMCA tea car in attendance, 10 January 1941. "

Ah, heck! I'll add it to my post above, too.

It kinda looks like the backs of the blades are painted black, which I believe, if hazy memory from building an Il-2 serves, was also done by our friends in foreign lands the Soviets.

I could also look at one of the many reference books I own, I guess. In MJF Bowyer's Aircraft for the Few, on p.176, there's a photo of Whitley III K8984 with 10 OTU in the summer of 1940: black blades, yellow tips. In his book Bombing Colours 1937-73, there's a photo of a 7 Squadron Whitley III, also with black blades. No date is given, but a photo archive at Wingleader.co.uk says it's at Finningley in 1938:

YMCA tea car??  This was presumably an early version of Village People, before they’d fully worked out the costumes.  Still, good line dance.

The thought of Crisp prancing around, dolled up as one of the Village People 💃 is quite disturbing.

The thought of five Bm`ers dressed up as "The Village People" is frightening.

It would bring some looks on "Strictly Come Dancing".

Whereas you were their first reserve on all European tours, I imagine.

No, I failed the audition. Something to do with the colour of my skin or the cut of my scales apparently. Kettle, Pot. Colour blind. Over.

More likely dressed as Morris dancers, running around with bells on their legs and flying their models around!

Propinquitous propellering Ced.

Personally I'd back Heather on blade colour, not 'cos I know anything but 'cos I'd trust her judgements on such matters.

Thanks Heather, Tony, Ben, Chris and PC :)

It makes some sort of sense to me that anything shiny was painted over at the outbreak of the hostilities and the scheme says '1939' but not which month. There are also no colours for the props in the instructions except the silver hub. Hmmm.

Lazy me says all silver, slightly less lazy me says maybe with silver tips, disciplined me (this one appears only occasionally) says 'usual' black with yellow tips but that's a bit I don't like doing. I shall ponder and test my mood. Thanks for the wise words all.

As for this lot…
