I'm sure you can see all the 'spare plastic' in that shot.

Very thoughtful of Fly to include all that spare plastic in case you need it.

Corrected your statement...

Nice dextering Ced.

Are you enjoying the kit yet?

You’re heroic efforts will pay off in the long run. The end result will be all the sweeter. This is real modelling with kits that fight back. I’m having an argument with the Kitty Hawk Jaguar at the moment and I keep getting visions of lump hammers and lots of screaming.

Careful Ced, you may turn into a "proper" modeller with all this altering bits and so on! Nice work on getting the turret mount to fit!

"Proper Modelling" What do you think this is "Hyperscale" LOL

Good work on this one Ced.

Thanks hendie :D Most of the spare plastic is ending up in the bin… but I am starting to enjoy the kit. Probably won't last?

Thanks Trevor - we will overcome! :)

Thanks Moggy, Trevor and Bill - certainly is a weird idea and one that thankfully 'developed', although I'm sure ventral turrets weren't popular with the gunners :)

I've failed to find the mojo for a suitably sized crew so I've decided this will be crewless. I know, but sometimes needs must.

Last view of the internals:

48534837486_571c2cc76f_z.jpg

Then it was out with the Touch-N-Flow and tape:

48534897426_2dcefd0895_z.jpg

With some careful encouragement the seam can be almost eliminated:

48534898411_fcfb8ae50b_z.jpg

Almost:

48535046187_b50ee2985e_z.jpg

After some careful removal of excess plastic the canopy is a good fit too:

48534938116_d191b75d54_z.jpg

Hang on, what's that hole behind the canopy? RATS, forgot the windows! I blame my utter confusion over this:

48535182831_befeb6588c_z.jpg

ALL of the little windows are optional and there are no slots for them, just scribing in the plastic.

In the absence of reference shots in the instructions I've done none of them - I may change my mind once I've chosen a subject IF I can find some photos.

While that was drying I went on to the empennage. Nasty ejector marks, easily removed with the #9 blade:

48534980681_d9d66dfcf1_n.jpg 48534988391_28374b39b8_n.jpg

The #9 is perfect for this sort of job - it just takes off the excess without much damage on the rest of the part.

But wait, what's this?

48535156187_444fec04e1_z.jpg

Could this be a locating pin?

48535158802_a470463652_z.jpg

Nah, unlikely, it's just excess plastic. With that cleaned off the tailplanes were glued and the rudders cleaned up:

48535077831_78398ace78_z.jpg

Then I wondered how the wheel bay doors would close up and saw this:

48535075141_0e5a6ff9d1_z.jpg

It looks like the resin bays replace part of the nacelle too so I won't be able to avoid using them. Oh dear.

They're going to take some cutting off those blocks.

Masks out boys!

That central seam looks much better than I thought it would, Ced - given the kind of kit, I mean. KUDOS

From what I understand the instruction sheet, they are no little round windows. So, you have not forgot them. You should use clear fix for them. So no need to get frantic.

Lordy.  I’ve looked at those instructions for some time, & I don’t think I am any wiser.

But you you are making a characteristically good job of beating this kit into submission.  Highly entertaining!

Thanks Giorgio and John - just some patience and the Touch-N-Flow; I find it much easier to use for this than the TET bottle and brush :)

Ah, my fault Ben, I didn't photograph the part of the sheet that shows them.

But I owe you my thanks - my first thought was to check the part trees and they're there:

48536151956_2562f92266_z.jpg

Clear as mud. But look, they're tapered. Why not try sticking 'em in from the outside?

48536184471_1c11ae4856_z.jpg

Result!

That pen thing is a vacuum pick up tool. It sucks, in the slang meaning of the term. Useless.

Thanks Crisp - we aim to please! :D Glad you're confused about the windows too.

Onwards!

Cut 5mm off the nacelles. Oooh look, there are some lines on the kit. Better make sure they're not 'other' panel lines:

48535401937_9cb8237580_z.jpg

5mm, great - cut here. The lines were just deep enough to guide the JLC so I 'scribed' gently with the saw until I got a deep enough guide and then went for it:

48535268281_01cfaedcaf_z.jpg

Then, the resin. Gulp. I used the 'Navy Bird' method of cutting guide slots around the part first using a contour saw and then went at it with the Dexter:

48535844011_19d9287c15_z.jpg

Just the one for now - there's only so much time I can spend doing Darth Vader impressions:

48535997642_54e8644668.jpg

Need to get my breath back. Why do these 3M masks 'wheeze' at the end of your breath? Some kind of marketing thing to make you think you'd wheeze more without the mask?

Success! I wondered why dust was appearing inside the well - there are two holes in the bottom for the u/c legs:

48536002247_f5338f5c2b_z.jpg

Quick clean up with the USB vacuum - yikes!

48536023207_9ec2e4d5bd_z.jpg

There is a spare filter but it's not as fine as you can see. I'll have to wash the other.

Does it fit the plastic?

See next post!

Well this is definitely excess plastic:

48535894951_a620d2bce1_z.jpg

Time to 'do a Baron' and get out the Jeweller's saw:

48536096952_018c420ee1_z.jpg

Now, do I need a 1/0, a 4/0 or what? No idea. Went for the middle ground before but I thought I'd investigate for the hive, or at least others who don't know.

Here are the 1/0 and 4/0 blades side-by-side:

48535950421_c3d162b87d_z.jpg

So it looks like the number is the 'grade' of the blade? The 1/0 is coarser?

I dropped the plastic on the floor:

48536107382_7ce8b5becc_z.jpg

Looks like time to clean the floor - Mrs B is banned from cleaning the man cave to avoid the tidy hidey! I blame Molly. I HOPE it's not my hair, I don't have much left!

Saw worked well:

48536116527_1521385e65_z.jpg

Especially around the corners. Nice tool.

Now then, I've cut one bay from the resin, but which one?

The instructions show a blob on U10 and not on the other:

48536179137_3be0e936a1_z.jpg

Hmmm :hmmm:

Oh wait, there's a tiny '1' just visible on one and nothing on the other.

And there's a '1' and '2' on the plastic 'rib' parts that go in the bays:

48536040821_02e99baeca_z.jpg

I'm going to assume this is so that the designers knew which part was which, even if they don't make it clear in the instructions.

At least the plastic fits really well:

48536063336_314403df50_z.jpg

Well, really well for a short-run.

Now I just need to work out how the resin fits in the nacelle.

Thanks John and Giorgio :)

The mask is a bit scary eh? I think the colours are different for different filters? You don't think pink suits me? :D

Still trying to decide where the resin fits in the wheel bay. Better dry fit the rest of the wings.

This will need attention:

48538139542_89e9d7a068_z.jpg

That lump on the end should be a hole - no really - there's a resin blob to go in there.

On first assembly I thought the spar was too big:

48538009161_bcf0ba9bd3_z.jpg

The nacelles don't really fit either:

48538175047_5c81db02b1_z.jpg

Now, don't forget this is a Fly short-run. Perhaps there's method in their madness and the spar is there to shape the wing? It does bend to shape:

48538176987_86da8b414a_z.jpg

Perhaps it's like that on purpose? How does it fit the wing root?

48538189612_e9a2d40b7f_n.jpg 48538049866_48fa73f7d4_n.jpg

Cunning. So all I need to do now is get the nacelles and resin bay sorted.

The instructions say to chop 5mm off the top too. Panel lines on the side but not on the top, so Dymo tape was used to 'join the lines:

48538264107_a3d025b873_z.jpg

With some fettling the bits fit - ish:

48538315162_9fb168795a_z.jpg

But it still doesn't help position the resin. Here?

48538187976_43dafa54e0_z.jpg

Maybe I should assemble the nacelles and see what happens:

48538346217_1bfe43aa92_z.jpg

Tomorrow…

Hello Ced, Nice chiseling.  Are there some carving tools and some extra wood in this kit too? Would be a nice effort by Fly.

Cheers

Thanks Ben :D Nope, no tools provided, sadly!

You are doing marvelous job Ced.

BTW does bashing plastic make you go blind?

Simon.

Thanks Simon :D

What's the difference between a Fly kit and an onion?

Nobody cries when you chop up a Fly kit.

Good news - the nacelles and bay doors almost fit without the resin:

48541941727_ee485f845f_z.jpg

48541796756_5a3bc6635f_z.jpg

The gap at the back is where the resin would have been so that answers that question for people building wheels down - the back of the resin goes outside the nacelle.

I'll have a look at the wheels and decide how to mount those next before I commit to more glue.

With Plasticard inserted at the back everything more or less fits:

48542686182_1b43bceb01_z.jpg

Something has to be glued so I decided to do the wings. The end bit looks as though it fits until you turn it over:

48542710567_e76bbaa242_n.jpg 48542562541_b770668e34_n.jpg

More excess plastic, of course:

48542565626_786355948a_z.jpg

With that trimmed and sanded the fit is much better so it's all been glued and the wheels assembled:

48542752822_d737926d63_z.jpg

I see some Milliput in my future. Or maybe Humbrol filler if it's not too bad? We shall see…
