YGBSM part deux, F-100F Wild Weasel from the Specialist GB

Recommended Posts

Back in March, when @trickyrich launched the Specialist GB I wasn't late to join in with the intention of doing a F-100F Wild Weasel.

Progress was fairly swift as can be seen here:

However, I got distracted by a certain deHavilland Hornet and the enthusiasm for the little WW faded for a while.

Also, I had some ideas to add intakes on the bottom of the fin, enlarge/add some RWR on the fin pod and a few other things...and we all know how that goes.

Correct, right into the cupboard of doom!

Well, we cannot be having that no more, can we?

I relaunch the thread here, in the hope of actually finishing it this time.

Famous last words...I know, I know :)

I decided to skip all further detailing, since I wasn't really feeling it anymore. Nothing was cut however so I could just carry on.

And carry on was what I did...and decided to start painting that lovely burned rear end!

I found this image as inspiration:

Linky

Armed with a sense of exploration, I decided to shoot some Vallejo metallics first

The I began to ponder. How to do the burned metal?

I needed something that was sort of brown-red but a bit translucent. Tamiya smoke is one way, but I felt that it's too dark.
Well, I settled for a mix of Tamiya clear and flat brown, the reasoning being that it should be sort of translucent.

It worked after a fashion but since I made it very thin, it was tricky to the avoiding spider runs.

The fist coat turned out ok, but a bit light. I redid the mix, but starting with red brown instead.
That made a better richer look:

The tricky thing was to make the dots up at the wing root. It's T.I.N.Y. in 1/72!

What do you think?

Should I try to improve it a bit further before masking it all up and slap on some primer?

Well, I went back again and tried do do a bit of purple shading as well. Unfortunately, Clear Red and Clear Blue didn't turn purple, but rather more brown...

There are some nasty spots and blobs of paint at the rear end  that I need to redo but I think that'll have to wait until after main painting, because I want to see how it all turns out.

Well, I decided to shoot some primer onto it.

The wing root of the reattached wing needed a bit more filler, but that was to be expected.

What was a bit more strange was that the canopy is a bit more narrow than the fuselage!

Some PPP was smeared on the front part, and by leaving the hood open I hope to get around the rear part.

Very strange though!

I had planned to paint this in August, but I forgot to bring the right paint to a modelling workshop and then it just got abandoned.
Shame on me!

This long Christmas-vacation was an eye-opener though!

I found it in the airing cupboard and decided to shoot some paint on it.
First out was the Tan colors, but I forgot to take a picture of it, but later on you might see it anyway.
I actually suck at freehand painting, so I brought forth my jar of shoe polish masking putty, and started to roll some sausages.

Gunze light green was shot through my trusty Iwata, and then I lightened the mix a bit and went all wobbly and curly. Postshade is the new black 😎
Since SWMBO was working today, and I was not, I bribed the kids with chocolate and Pokémon and applied even more masking putty.

This stuff is the best modelling aid I've bought! Low tack, doesn't leave any residue and it is reusable. Good stuff!
Back when I was trying to paint white distemper on a Harrier GR3, I tried to tape on top of the decals with disastrous result!

Had I used this then, the result might have been a lot different.

On with the painting!

Gunze is my paint of choice here, and it is just as good and simple to use as Tamiya acrylics.

Why I even bother with other brands is a mystery...

But from what I gather some colors are not very good in Gunze's rendition (PRU Blue perhaps?) so one needs to have a few backups.

Right.

Now comes the funniest bit. Unmasking!

This is actually MORE fun than unwrapping Christmas presents!

Tomorrow, the wife will do some more work, so there should be a chance to paint the underside...

It surely is! :D And looks like you got a nice one :)

Did the Wild Weasel Super Sabre had any additional antennas or equipment - in comparison to normal F-100F?

Thanks!

The Weasel mod of F-100F is quite substantioal, but @TheRealMrEd got a great WIP here

Thanks for the cheers guys!

Due to a paint mishap, I wasn't able to paint the underside in one sitting. I grabbed the wrong pot, Gunze 315 instead of 311 and Light Gull Grey is not the correct shade. But it could be used as a foundation for further painting!

Anyway, I ended up with leaving the masking putty in place for a while. I was hoping that the near 0 degrees in the airing cupboard on the balcony would stop it from oozing but I was wrong:

Peculiar stuff this masking goo.

With the correct color, I finally managed to finish the underside

Unfortunately, the demarcation wasn't what I wanted, since the putty had sort of run away.

Just redo it then...

And that is done done, as well as a glosscoat but now it needs to harden for a while before doing something else.

Too bad about the gooey masking putty, weird stuff! Looking forwards to seeing the finished camo job - it's one of the coolest camo's there is and looks like you have good colors for it too :)

Going back to the hot metal  areas try Tamiya clear blue on it's own, maybe experiment on an old kit or scrap plastic first.

Yeah, I think I'll do that once it comes to the major weathering phase.

Today I hope to paint some Interior green on assorted bays and stuff, and maybe do some more panel fading/tinting

Interior green has been painted.

I also tried to shade the control surfaces with some Tamiya Smoke, just to add some variety, but if it's good or not I leave to you.

49352887522_70de292da8_o.jpg

It's a tricky technique to pull off, primarily since Smoke is very troublesome to paint with. You have to build up lots of layers to get any effect, but once you CAN see it with your eyes, it's too much.

And if you can't see it, you tend to add more paint on top, making it runny, which also spoils things.

Also, the camera totally washes out the postshade of the underside.

It's there, honest! Just impossible to photograph properly...

Stickers on!

This was done in a little bit above one hour! I used the Trumpeter ones, so it might not be that surprising after all. They didn't provide full stenciling, and from what I can see of what is there it's wrong...

But they got on quite all right, so that's always something!
