Douglas DC-8-61 Aeromexico Nitto 1:200

Recommended Posts

Here I would like to show you this classic airliner before the wide bodies were available. The kit is from Nitto and has also been on the market under the Doyusha label (afaik).

The kit's decals were quite ok, but I did not like the liveries (KLM and JAL). So Draw decals came to the rescue with this colourful livery. The specialists among the audience may have noticed, that Aeromexico did not use the -61, but the -63 with slightly different engines. But I hope nobody else will notice...

The Cockpit glazing was not usable. So I had to use filler and had to sand it. The decals from Draw were also useful here.

I hope you like this sleek airliner. Any comment is welcome.

cheers,

Norbert

Great looking model of the DC-8. Always had a soft spot for these. A good friend of mine had an Uncle that flew as a Navigator on these until the 80's towards the end of his career he was flying for an air cargo/charter company.

Hi Norbert...she looks GREAT! You've done a great job busting my opinion of the Nitto small scale stuff. I had always heard, and had the notion, that the Nitto small scale models were really not good, presenting all kinds of issues with accuracy and proper scale, and just plain bad looking. You've done a bang-up work here...thanks for sharing...and changing my mind! I'm working on a Minicraft DC-8 right now, so any and every good representation of the DC-8 is inspiring! 👍

Well, it required quite a lot of work, but it is the only game in town in this scale.

The Minicraft kit is also part of my stash. I have heart only good Things about it and i am Looking forward to building it.

Glad you like it, thanks for your comment!

Very cool plane Norbert!  😎  Were those in service back in the mid-60s?   When we traveled to Australia in 1966, and returned in '67, I know we flew on a four jet-engined Douglas airliner on one or two legs of those very long flights over the Pacific, but I don't recall the type.  Perhaps a DC-7 back then?

Hi Gary,

it is very likely that you flew on a DC-8 or a Boeing 707. The DC-7 had Piston engines.

I like it when a model brings up old memories!

Probably a DC-8 then.  I know several flights were on 707s and 727s.  One leg from Sydney to Melbourne was one a Vickers Viscount I believe and one other leg might've been on a Lockheed Electra, not sure about that.  But at least two of the airliners were large 4-engined turbo-prop planes.  My very first flight was the initial leg of our journey, from Austin to Dallas in March 1966.  We flew on a DC-3 belonging to Trans-Texas Airways.  In Dallas we switched to a Being 707 for the flight to LA.  Man, what a difference!!   😁

Always loved the DC-8. Brings back fond memories of being a young spotter at Ringway in the 70’s. Those were the days when you could spot aircraft like the DC-8 coming in from miles away by the trail of soot and smoke they left in their wake. Modern airliners are just not the same! Love it nice model.

How is it I missed that one ?

Airliners are faster than combat aircraft, zooming past to the next page in wink...

Well done Norbert with this livery. As you say, it is the only one in this scale with its draw backs.

Reminds me of this one in the original livery :

A shame they are no more available together with the Convair 880.

Cheers.

AV O
