1:48 Rat Bird (kit bash)

Recommended Posts

Man, that looks so wicked!

I can see it being taken even further by being jet-powered like the Mig-9, or going back and turning it into a biplane.

As to the prop, I don't recall if you were going to be using the P-47's or the Corsair's?

HaHaHa, that payload is awesome! 🤩

Thanks Martin

its not quite the same as the original...

...but it's a reasonable go, I'm happy with it anyway. As you can see from Christian's drawing he placed all of the bombs towards the centre of the aircraft but as someone mentioned earlier the landing gear wouldn't be able to be deployed so I've gone for the practical option.

Enough weight on that left wing to counteract the propeller torque?

This really comes together nicely.

All the bit look like they were meant to be one airplane.

Very pretty!

thanks Tzulscha

the "stand" is angled and therefor gives the whole thing extra "tilt" however I'm reasonably convinced that it'd fly in circles

I was surprised at how well the Corsair wings fitted the Thunderbolt's body, just lucky I guess, if you want to see some real 'work' in making things fit checkout Crusty one's P-Dirty Eight...

For my next aircraft kit-bash I've been thinking of a biplane, sort of, I've got a couple of ideas I just need to work through, as far as I can, what donor kits I need.

I'll be using the P-47's prop, I've primer'd it already and I'll add the other paint after I've built the base for the stand.

Hi Chaps

are there any German speakers reading this log?

Google translate tells me that the German for dragonfly is wasserjungfer, is this correct, it's been a very, very long time since I took German at school and to say I'm rusty would be an understatement.

many thanks in advance

Tsk! You'll get nowhere with that sort of attitude, young man!

BTW, I just noticed the washing line on the original drawing. 😁

My google says Libelle is also a Dragonfly? Mind it's also the word for a spirit level!

Are you going to do the cowl-sight as well?

As to taking off with the depicted load-out, it could be launched like the V2. Drop the bombs and then it can land normally.

yes, sort of, I've got a PE gun-sight from an Eduard Gladiator that I'll be adding, probably one of the last things I'll add as I just know I'd knock it off and feed the carpet monster!

"Libelle" is the more commonly used word for dragonfly.

So the base/plinth for the stand will be made from a small photo frame and some plastic card.

The glass and back from the photo frame were removed leaving just the frame.

48775436337_2e82633db5_z.jpg

It’s a 6x4 frame and unusually?, the glass was really glass not plastic, I was hoping to make use of the “plastic glass”

The plinth part of the base was made from some “plastic glass” from a larger picture frame cut to size.

48775436562_dc85e486d4_z.jpg

Here you can see the protective film still attached to the plastic.

You’ll notice that I’ve cut a square hole to allow for the square aluminium tube.

48775248926_b8046abaf6_z.jpg

This will be cut to length once the plinth has been completed.

4 sides and the top of the plinth were glued together to make a box.

48775436102_d72350d1b4_z.jpg

I decided to add some corner braces to the plinth, then I sanded the glossy surface of the photo frame and attached the plinth box to it with some Araldite

48775573937_b70570afb9_z.jpg

Once the Araldite had fully cured I gave the base/plinth a coat of UMP/Stynylrez black primer.

On to the propellor next.

until next time

as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received.

The Tamiya P-47 kit gives you a choice of two propellors the Curtiss Electric paddle blade or the Hamilton Standard, I’ve chosen the one that looks the closest to Christian’s version?

Anywho, the prop was given a coat of UMP/Stynylrez black primer.

48781442776_dd129d1ee4_z.jpg

The prop hub was masked and then given a coat of vallejo 77.701 aluminium.

Yellow tips

48781047363_0afdf4d065_z.jpg

The black parts were highlighted with highly thinned Tamiya XF-24.

48781046558_9f36e1d8be_z.jpg

And finally some chipping applied to the edges of the blades.

48781407946_a4e50a8c21_z.jpg

next I’ll be adding the final bits’n’pieces, ariel, pitot, cowl gun-sight, pilot etc.

until next time

as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received.

If you do the translation back and forth a few times, it will give you damselfly for a Wasserjungfer (or Kleinlibelle) and dragonfly for a Libelle (or Großlibelle) and odonata for a Libelle in general ;-)

When talking to plain folks "Libelle" will work nicely and Wasserjungfer may produce a question mark or two. In case you need help with the pronounciation ...

Good work on the prop and the base. Seeing the construction of the base, I thought you were going for a clear plinth.

thanks Thom

the base was just made for what I had to hand, in truth it wasn't very clear so its best painted
