I like the marking you've chosen too. Again it looked sort of familiar and then @fubar57 hit the nail on the head. (Smartypants of the day award to him!) How about searching for old wartime posters and copy one as a decal? A section of it cut to the shape of a panel? Keep them coming, I'm enjoying this as much as you are! Christer you're very kind, completely mistaken but kind none the less I'm just stumbling from one part to the next rgds John The push rods were painted with Tamiya XF-69 NATO black and given a wash of Tamiya panel liner black. [ I wanted to add a little more detail to the engine so I drilled some holes in the cylinders and then some thin wire was bent to fit. After dry brushing gearbox cover was given a coat of aqua-gloss and the Tamiya supplied decal was added. All of the engines bits’n’pieces were then assembled. Dry-fitted to the cowling. Next I’ll be painting the engine cowling. until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins)

Pete in Lincs
I vote for either the top half of 'is your journey..." or the Sailor in a lifebelt Players sign. But what do I know? Oh, nice engine BTW. Those two odd bits on it are probably the magneto's.

Those two odd bits on it are probably the magneto's. the "is your journey..." was the one I was leaning towards, the sentiment being nailed to an airplane kinda appeals. The 'down side' is that the background is very light and I'm not sure it would have enough contrast? The Players sign will have enough contrast and does 'feel right' all of the suggestions would look good, I'll have a ponder and will eventually make a decision. thanks for everyones interest. rgds John

shortCummins
The cowling was removed from the sprue, the inside masked and then given a coat of UMP/Stynylrez black primer. As was the cowling flaps. A “base” coat of vallejo 77.701 aluminium. Once the vallejo had fully cured, I left it overnight, I sprayed a coat of hairspray*, TRESemme 3 firm hold, and then a coat of Hobby Color H3 red Well I tried to spray Hobby Color H3 red thinned 50/50 with UMP thinner, unfortunately I couldn’t get the paint to spray no matter how much I thinned it?, it just clogged up my airbrush, very strange. When spraying Hobby Color I ‘normally’ use ‘levelling’ thinner, not UMP, so there could have been an issue with either my ratios using the UMP thinner, or perhaps UMP won’t work with Hobby Color? The paint is acrylic and I’m sure I’ve used it in the past? Anyhow I switched to Tamiya X-7 red, mixed 50/50 with UMP thinner and sprayed the cowl, no problems with spraying, so go figure. Interestingly?, when I spray the red over the ‘main’ cowl this happed… I’m guessing that a combination of the hairspray not being left long enough, I only waited between 5 and 10 minutes, and over-thinning?, of the paint caused this reaction almost immediately. I need to test/practice this method before I have another go, but I'm a convert, I really like this effect and I'll be using it again and again. I’m not upset with the result, the paint crazing looks like the paint has been damaged by heat? anyhow it looks far more realistic than any attempt of mine however, I decided to add a wee bit more scratches and chips. Not too bad for a first attempt, I’m really pleased with the result, a huge dose of beginners luck, and I’m sure that I’ll get better with practice. *I followed Mike Rinaldi’s method, via Will Pattison’s youtube, for chipping, as this is the first time I’ve tried hairspray chipping any success is down to Mike and Will, any errors are of my own making! Here’s a link to Will’s video on chipping fluids comparison… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7cu5O24h0M The ‘method’ Spray ‘base colour’ Let fully cure Spray hairspray Approx. 5 minutes spray top colour, after this experiment I’d wait 10-15 minutes Allow to dry, I waited for approx. an hour Attack with water and brush(s) and other scratching implements STOP before you go too far. Next I’ll be building the cowling and engine sub-assembly. until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins)

Cheers / André whilst 1/72 is far too small for my old eyes I agree that the lack of additional characters, in both 1/72 and 1/48, is a strange one, you'd think that there would be several ground crew, air crew sets as well as civilians to add to dioramas As far as I know, for 1/48, there's a Tamiya US pilot set, Eduard re-boxing? of ICM sets and that's about it. How about a Lancaster bomber crew or pilots in different poses, I'm sure they'd sell. rgds John
Corsairfoxfouruncle
Ive used hairspray a number of times. I do two liberal coats with a few hours between each coat. Then when those are dry i spray the color(s). I Wait about 10-15 minutes after the color before it really sets. Then i use an old toothbrush, cotton buds, and scriber for panel line chipping. Here are two of my WIP builds using hairspray if they might help. And a third build with light chipping and weathering using hairspray. Hopefully these help you or someone else. shortCummins
Assembling the cowl/engine sub-assembly started by adding some weathering to the inside of the cowl and air-scoop. For years I’ve been using an oil paint set from the pound shop and as the outsides of the tubes of paint were really sticky and crusty I decided it was time to splash out on some “proper” oils so I bought half a dozen Abteilung 502 colours, here I’ve used ABT006 burnt umber “blended” with odourless turpentine. Once the oil paint had dried I added some MIG oil and grease stain mixture. I also added some oil stains to the engine gearbox. The air-scoop and engine fixed into the cowl. Here is the engine/cowl sub-assembly ‘dry fitted’ to the aircraft. Now that the engine and cowl are completed next I need to add some extra “paint” to the airframe, wing walkways etc. before I can make a start on the exhausts. until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins)

janneman36
Hello John, i love your build but as biggles87 wrote it still looks like a regular aircraft so i would suggest bigger exhaust stacks or maybe a set of porcupine exhausts to get it i little more out of this world..or a set of small turrets on the wings or fuselage. still love to see how this progresses .. cheers, Jan
