SEAD vs. SAM GB Proposal - @ 11

Recommended Posts

Alright, chatting w/ @trickyrich we figured we'd give this a go to see if it might get enough interest on it's own.  Lots of possibilities.  It will also tie in nicely w/ @Col.'s proposed interceptor GB.  ^_^

SEAD (Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses)

- Wild Weasels

- ECM Jammers (think EA-6A/B & EF-111)

- Guided missile ships (Tomahawk launchers ;))

- Special Forces

SAM

- SAMs (duh :giggle:), mobile or fixed, surface or sea (the USN utilized some guided missile cruisers dedicated to the task of air defense).

- AAA batteries (mobile or fixed).

Post up if it's something you may be interested in.  If so we'll get a list going.

Buckle up, it's going to be a bumpy ride!  :wicked:

Well i need an F-100F, an F-105G, and an F-4G weasel so count me in ? Won't build both but will build one of the two ? Does anyone do an EA-6A in 1/72 ? Or an actual A-6B in 1/72 for that matter ? If so they may be options as well ? "YGBSM" is a favorite acronym of mine.

Ooh, I'm not aware of a 1/72 EA-6A.  I know Revell did one in 1/48.

The USN definitely embraces the Wild Weasel role...as nearly every attack aircraft after the introduction of the Shrike that has flown off the carriers since the A-4 Skyhawks has been utilized in that role...very opposite of the USAF in their use of specific squadrons for the role.

Both Fujimi and Italeri did one in 1/72nd scale.

Would aircraft used for Iron Hand type missions be eligible (both the bombers and their escorts)?

Regarding Iron Hand aircraft, I think I'd like to keep the birds focused on loadouts pertaining to the actual suppression of SAM/AAA sites, at least for now.  If it were to be opened up to the MiG Cap escorts as well, it would open it up to nearly every aircraft flown off USN carriers since the Iron Hand missions in the mid-60s.  As is, the USN embraced to concept to the point that those mission profiles were trained on (and flown) by all attack squadrons (quite likely even today).

If there was a story regarding a particular aircraft/pilot during an Iron Hand op, I may be open to an exemption.  But as a general rule I'd like to hold MiG Cap off for now.  I'm trying not to overlap Col's Interceptor GB too much.

@trickyrich, open to second opinions if you have other thoughts on the matter.

You could stick a Vulcan in there too from 1982

I'd forgotten about that one.  Yup, Black Buck Vulcans would be eligible, as ironic as it sounds for a strategic bomber being a weasel.  :giggle:

@Wez @helios16v I'd sort of have to agree with Chris on this one as well.

While the bombers and escorts were part of these missions they weren't the actual "suppression" aircraft, they just followed in once everything was sort of clear. The Shrike armed A-3's, A-4's, and A-6's used on these missions are perfect though.

I'm planning an Yom Kipper war Israeli F-4E Kurnass for this one, though a later one with with LGB would be cool.. The Israeli's pretty much used their Phantoms for SEAD operations almost right from the start right up to the types retirement. In fact most of the air to air victories in Phantoms occurred on SEAD missions.

It's not cheap but if anyone interested in the subject then this is a fantastic book;

I've got Part 2 as well, deals a lot with the RF-4E and latter operations.

I'm in so much trouble if this thing actually makes it through...I don't know what to pull from the stash.  I've got a plethora of aircraft that have been outfitted for the role, plus on the ground side I've got a couple mobile SAMs and a few AAAs.

Most likely candidates however will probably be either the Prowler (1/72) or Raven (1/48).

I presume all era of AA is good? If so I have a couple of WW2 tracked flak guns and an 88 I could build. If not I could build my F-105 WW.

As far as AAA goes, I don’t see why not.  Air side is a bit harder to justify as to my knowledge there wasn’t any special load out or mission profile for AAA suppression.  It was just another bombing run.  I could very well be mistaken though, as to be honest I’m not thoroughly versed on WW2 AAA suppression.

I’ll get you added.  Welcome aboard.

This is the Fujimi EA-6A model.

Fujimi-EA6-A-Intruder.jpgAnd I can't think of any qualifying kits in my stash  -  time to buy some more at RIAT.

Finally, a reason for me to the Miniart quad Maxim gun-on-a-truck kit. I've been wondering how to justify that. :)

Also, I can see having to decide between a Shilka and a Tunguska... (Enzo, be quiet :))

You can add my name to the list Chris, I really need to add a Spangdahlem F-4G Phantom to my collection and I already have the kit.

Mmm yes, the lovely Spang birds.

Now for the real tough question.....scheme.  Classic SEA?  Stunning Euro1?  Or all business Hill Grey?

That is the most important question!

I've got decals for the Hill Grey scheme but I would really like to build one in Euro 1 as that is the scheme I remember seeing (and have pics of) at air shows.
