RF-5E Malaysian Air Force

Thanks Craig. The decals although they did seem to be a bit on the thick side did behave themselves. Almost there now. After having a weeks hiatus due to lack of varnish, yesterday I managed to get a rattle can of the stuff and proceeded to get the model sprayed. Yesterday evening I concentrated on this model and got it to where it is now. The other fuel tank does fit it just falls off it attachment points so that is why it s not fitted in these pictures. The other fuel tanks are not glued, so can come off if required for further modelling purposes. I did loose a few parts to the carpet monster, but luckily I do have another kit to rob them from, just need to replace these somehow. I will also have to find a better way of fitting the pitot probe rather than the butt fit that it is now. Hopefully finished for tomorrow as it will be taken to my local club meet.

Nice to see a RMAF RF-5E in this GB  But I think your aircraft shows the RF-5E as it was in service with the RMAF during the 1990s as you used the square national marking and the No.12 Squadron marking when all F-5s got combined into No.12 Squadron.

RMAF roundel development are very confusing. officially they used the square roundel until 1982 and from then on the round roundel. But there was a period from the early 1990s to the end of the 1990s when the square marking was used again!

The RF-5Es had been delivered with round roundels as can be seen in this 1983 picture prior delivery.

And here a picture I took in 1986 in No.11 Squadron markings

And another picture in 1996 with the square roundels in No.12 squadron marking.

The Hawks and MiG-29 had been delivered with square roundels during the mid 1990s.

But the Hornets carried round roundels when delivered in 1997 and most aircraft slowly converted back to round roundels since then, but the RF-5Es kept the square roundels until retirement.

Cheers, Peter

Thanks for the info but unfortunately it will be staying as it is, as it is now finished. The instructions gave no info about what time period the markings were for even though they did provide both styles of roundel, and I could not find any other info. Perhaps I should have asked here rather than blundering on with the build.

Here are pictures of the finished model. I borrowed a couple of Sidewinders from a Hasegawa weapons set as I found the kit ones too fiddly to build.

Very well done indeed!

She looks fantastic in that colour scheme and you have done a great job of it.

The intake blanks really do add something to the finished look.

Thanks for taking part in the GB Jabba and for contributing such a great model and for giving advice and help to us all along the way.
