The Specialists II - open to themes?

Recommended Posts

I know The Specialists GB has only just finished but it was a popular GB with a large number of builds with near 40 making the gallery.

I know there is interest in a follow up, plus there was interest in including other themes/subjects into the build.

So I'd like to do it again with 3 or 4 themes, but this time I'd like to leave it up to the members to choose the themes/subjects.

So here's a chance to select you favourite subject, hopefully a subject/theme we don't normally see built in a GB. It's completely open to any type of model, land/sea/air, military or even non-military. It only has to be part of a specialised subject. It could be Le Mans racers, Rocket powered craft, gliders, Submarines???

Once we get enough subjects I'll start a poll to choose the final subjects and then with luck we'll have enough interest to go to the GB voting.

It sounds a bit confusing but I think it'll all sort itself out. So start thing about you favourite subject you like to build.

---------------------------------------------

Ok there has already been some really interesting ideas, I'll stick some up here, but this isn't a final list by any means, just for discussion at the moment. But please go through the posts as well as there are plenty more great ides that just need some refining to turn them into winners.

- Odd-Ball, One-Off's, and Prototypes

- Motorsport & Record Breakers

- Nuc's (either carried or powered)

- Liaison, FAC craft (not Recon but more Utility craft)

- Littoral, Landing, Amphibious craft

- Kamikaze, Last-Ditch craft

- "War Games" - Aggressors/Tiger Meet/Special Exercises

- Flak/AAA vs SEAD/Wild Weasel (will be trying for seperate GB)

- VIP & Transport Equipment

- The Engineers

These are a few to get the brain cells working.

oh and nearly forgot the list;

What about coastal patrol craft or brown water navy stuff, P.T. Boats, PBR's, LCACS, and or Littoral combat vessels ?  Ive been wanting an excuse to build a USS Pegasus. I thought there had been a model by revell or someone else back in the early 80's, though I might be mistaken ?

Thanks for organising the previous one - I’d partake in the next.

A couple of suggestions:

-ASV craft, could be the large flying boats to helicopters to corvettes and frigates

-Liasion, certainly overlooked in importance. Using the US nomenclature, this includes artillery observation (as opposed to recon) which would include a number of Great War types as well

I'm game.  Always love specialized mission equipment.  I'll go dig through my stash and find the interesting mission ones and come back w/ some ideas.

Some ideas:

- Tankers (land, sea, or air.  civi or military)

- SAR

- Motorsports (Land, sea, or air)

- Armageddon (nuke delivery platforms)

Kamikaze could maybe be expanded to last-ditch to allow a few *slighlty* less suicidal ideas.

I think there's plenty to choose from. I'm not just thinking Kamikaze aircraft of course, but things like IJN Midget submarines, Operation Ten-Go ships, Sonderkommando Elbe aircraft, tanks and infantry from Iwo Jima and Okinawa that were pretty much suicidal assignments for the Japanese.

Could a Strategic Air Command B-47 or B-52 nuclear mission be considered a Kamikaze mission. Its acknowledged that those were going to be one way missions. As there would be nothing left to come back to.

I see there are some thinking caps being put to good use here, and some interesting and different ideas as well. Now the hard part...correlating these ideas

@Corsairfoxfouruncle "brown water"/Littoral craft does sound interesting, I think we could add landing craft and amphibious craft to that was well. I think we had a Coastal Patrol GB very recently....but something else to keep in mind.

@Panther II Oddball/One Off's sound interesting, maybe it should be open to air and sea craft as well, you'd get some really interesting stuff?

@Torbjorn Liaison does sound interesting, I'd add FAC to it for modern stuff, there's some nice WWII stuff that would qualify and be popular as well.

@Beazer that sounds interesting, how would you qualify a build? Maybe we could go "Winter Op's" You could then get some of the cool winter schemes as well??

@helios16v Tankers is something new and not done before. SAR is very specialised. Motor is very interesting, as a GB it's been tried many times and never got up (think one did a few yers ago) but there are lots of petrol heads here! Armageddon, I think there has been a GB for this trying to get up for the past few years, maybe a chance. I'd be tempted to call it "Nuc's" and open it up to anything that carries or is powered by Nuclear material?  Aggressor's would be fun.

@Col. you forgot one.......... Co-Host!! :D Prototypes I'd include with One-Off's (give greater range of options). Racers & Record-breakers included in a over arching theme with Motorsport would be ideal. Research... could that be included in the One Off's/Odd-balls/Prototypes, now that GB would be full of a strange stuff (I do like this one a lot!!).

@Brad I know you've tried to get the Kamikaze one up, I think it just needs to include something else with it. Maybe @Torbjorn is right in adding some last ditch stuff as well, the Bachem Ba-349 is a good example, you could even go as far as adding the Me-163?? I think the idea just needs to be worked a wee bit more but it would be a goer I'm sure. @Corsairfoxfouruncle I probably wouldn't add the B-47/52's to this, even though they probably could be called "one way" missions. I mean you could then almost add a lot of the very early RAF raids over Germany...the stuff they flew there and in most cases never made it back were just not because of enemy action either (Hampden's running out of fuel on the way back due to head winds!!).

@Mottlemaster I don't think we've ever had a Mine Hunter Gb, that's an interesting idea!

Ok, I stick a lot of these in the first post as there are some really interesting ideas to discuss and refine.

Winter as in anything that is related.  Doesnt have to be dedicated craft.

Could be something as simple as operating during.  Planes with winter paint schemes.  Ships that served in Norway, Tanks of the bulge.

Id Like to see a tiger meet/aggressor build but that kinda excludes all but the aircraft.

Could I also be a co-host?

@trickyrich Yes, anything that floats, flies, and generally move using an engine would be my idea...

of course you can

No love for Flak? Might give the mud movers something to build and there's plenty of tracked AA kits on the market, not to mention stand alone AA guns and SAM systems.

was just thinking if it's extended to "Flak/SAM vs SEAD/Wild Weasel", now that would generate interest.

What about Engineers, sappers, Bomb disposal units, WW1 mining troops, and Demolition troops as a sub-group ? Lots of specialized vehicles and equipment ? Would also ge a good option for vignette's, diorama's, and Figure builders to join in ?

Count me in.

From the themes that have been suggested so far, I like the sound of these:

Odd-balls, one-offs and prototypes - some really interesting possibilities here - the prototypes and experimental GB a year or two ago was awesome

Aggressors/Tiger Meet - always up for this - perhaps expand to special purpose colour schemes? Then you could incorporate non-standard colour schemes for war games and exercises, experimental schemes (eg Heater/Ferris), anniversary schemes

Flak/SAM vs SEAD - I'd do a wild weasel, or maybe the Shrike armed Vulcan from Black Buck 5 or 6

A couple of other suggestions:

Special forces - something for the AFV folks, and special forces aircraft and helicopters - wouldn't mind doing an MC-130 one of these days

Emergency services - SAR, firefighting, police (including military police), ambulances/medevac - basically everything I've suggested in the Emergency! GB thread, it could be merged into this one instead
