Alex1978
This is the old Heller kit of the famous DC-10. In came out around 1975 with UTA markings and is still available now with Aero Mexico decals. The Swissair boxing came,as well as their 747 kit,in the 80s and offered decals for the earlier red stripe livery as well as the then new brown stripe livery. As with the 747 Swissair decals, the red stripe decals are also on the DC-10 kit way off shape,so the whole livery was painted on and only the logos and markings were used from the kit decals. Heller got the shape of the DC-10 quite right compared to the Revell and Airfix offerings, only the cockpit clear part is a little wrong. That can be corrected by using decals. I added those little fairings on the engine nacelles, seems only Hasegawa in 1/200 and Nitto in 1/100 had them included. All other manufacturers seemed to omit these parts for some reason. I also opened up the air inlets and backed them up with small parts of evergreen plastic under the cockpit as they were only scribed on the fuselage. The APU was also made of a small plastic tube as on the kit is nothing but a circle. The rest of the build is OOB and the parts went together without issues. Its a great kit in my opinion that builds up into a very nice DC-10,although the odd scale doesn't allow comparision to other airliner kits except Heller's . Paints are all Revell enamels, the decals come from the kit, door outlines and handles were obtained from a Revell A380 ! and the cockpit window comes from the 1/144 !! NAZCA detail set for the DC-10... A very detailed and nice decal set,but they went completely out of scale with the cockpit windows. But they match perfectly on the1/125 heller kit Enjoy Edited July 10, 2019 by Alex1978
stevehnz
Nice job on that, the Swissair livery was right up there with the best & you've caught it nicely. Steve.

Adam Poultney
Looks really good! I like the DC10's look, but it's questionable early safety record (that did improve later on) puts me off the idea of ever wanting to get on one, although I think they only fly cargo now and mainly on the other side of the Atlantic. There's just something about trijets that makes them look really good, a lot of the airliners I want to model are trijets (I need to build a Tu154). It looks like the Boom Overture ('Concorde 2' as the media likes to call it) will be a trijet, which I cannot wait to see flying and to build a model of. Skodadriver
Well done Alex, that's really excellent. Lovely classic livery on a beautiful model I've never built any of the Heller kits because of the odd scale but I sometimes wonder if I'm missing out. NorbertBu
I admire your effort to correct things. And thank you for the warning of the Nazca decals. They are always good for a surprise….although I like them a lot.

Dave G Thank you very much Dave.Yes,the scale is odd and if you have no other Heller airliner it matches to nothing.I have most of the Heller 1/125 civvies and i really like them. The DC-10 was probably the most accurate of the type shapewise thats near to 1/144 for a long time. Now that the EE DC-10 kit is available its of course going to be second choice. I still have two more in my stash along with the TriStar,A300,A320,737 and 747 which will give a nice collection. 5 hours ago, stringbag said: Cracking job Alex. , and one of the nicest schemes to adorn this classic aircraft. Turbofan
Hi Alex, Oh yes, what a classic! They definitely nailed the nose shape but I'm not so sure about the number 2 intake or the nose gear. Doesn't detract from your build though Alex. This Swissair livery was always a favourite of mine, I think it's because of the little aeroplane in front of the titles! Cheers, Ian

Yes,the nose gear is quite simple and also a bit thin.Thats a problem of most Heller 1/125 scale airliners.Their landing gear is very generic but I haven't the nerves all the time to improve such parts and sometimes I build the models just OOB to maintain their character of their time of release and only change/enhance parts that are more clearly visible, such as the wing engines on the DC-10. The number 2 intake looked ok for me except the outlet but I thought it will look good enough. As the plastic is also very thin.there isn't much to work with and replacement parts are sadly non existent on the aftermarket for those kits. The old Swissair livery was indeed very classy and the DC-10 I built is even named after my city. "Basel" All the more reason for me to build this ancient kit
Hobo
Another beautiful build Alex. The size must be impressive in 1/125. It appears you're a big fan of the old Swissair schemes like me! I don't know why, but I find the old classic schemes much more attractive than most modern schemes. Edited July 12, 2019 by Hobo

Yes,I really like those old schemes, and as a Swiss guy,I am collecting all Swiss airlines in their different liveries. Its quite big in 1/125 and finding an adequate space to place it isn't easy
