Flankerman
Look what the postman just delivered - all the way from the snowy wastes of Severodvinsk in Russia..... It's a 1/350 scale resin kit of HMS Oberon....... Cast in solid, chocolate coloured resin, it looks to be free of pinholes, with just a small casting seam along the hull... There are few parts - the above hull, plus a conning tower, fore and aft dive planes, two propellers, two masts and two styles of sonar dome... There are no instructions nor markings - but that isn't a problem - I think I can work it out. I got it from this eBay seller :- https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Submarine-resin-kit-of-SS-Oberon-class-the-UK-1-350-scale/264271889518?hash=item3d87d5046e:g:jlYAAOSwy8JctiIL ...and service was excellent - ordered on 21 June, posted on 28 Jun, delivered on 8 July. I might try to make it as HMS Opossum - with an interesting camo scheme and 'sharkmouth'. ....and it might inspire me to finish my HMS Tabard build...... bootneck
I would really like to get one of those, for my Falklands collection, but that postage is a bit high for me, at almost 50% of the cost of the kit. cheers, Mike

Very interesting, I wonder who/ where the molds came from? 43 minutes ago, bootneck said: I would really like to get one of those, I'm tempted. The only other option is Resin Shipyards offering but the last time I spoke to them indicated that they weren't trading for the foreseeable future? Anyway, their offering was $70 Canadian, so our Russian offering starts to look good. Stuart
whitestar12chris
Nice one Ken, ive got one on watch, have had several of their resin subs and they are very nice. With very little effort you can also portray a porpoise class, using the smaller sonar and scribing an aft torpedo tube opening sorted. All the best Chris
Paul Bradley
Oooh! My dad served on Oberon, and a few other O Boats. Seriously tempting........
Flankerman
A quick squirt of Halfords Grey Plastic Primer highlights the mould seam running diagonally fore and aft on both sides of the hull.... Some close-ups..... starboard front end.... Port rear...... Starboard rear........ Another view of the Stbd front....... I'm assuming it's a mould seam - and not part of the hull structure (???) I'm planning to use filler to hide it - so if you think the seams should be there, shout now before I make a complete fool of myself..... JohnWS
Here's a photo of HMCS Ojibwa, an Oberon. She doesn't appear to have a seam. John

I'd agree, but it could be put to some use possibly, as to my untrained eye it looks to run very close to the waterline, but maybe not when I look at the bow? Kevin Aris
look like they tried to put a waterline in (and not very well at that) having served 8 years on Odin i see no other reason for that line
Flankerman
It's probably just a tear in the silicone rubber mould.......... It doesn't follow the waterline - it would make the bows way too high and the stern almost underwater if it were.... Ken

Flankerman
Sorting that seam out...... Apply filler port.... Apply filler Stbd.... Sand down Stbd..... Sand down Port.... Apply primer Stbd...... Apply primer Port..... Seeemples..... There are a couple of flat spots that still need sorting - but the fix was easy - the longest time was waiting for the filler to harden. Paul Bradley
In the early days, they had pennant numbers on the fin, but those disappeared in the early seventies, I think. Yes on the depth markings on the forward ballast tanks.

Paul Bradley
I remember them as white, but those who served will remember better I'm sure! Perhaps the colour changed over time - there are some later photos where the markings aren't visible, so maybe they're in red.
