1/48 Hasegawa F-15C Eagle Kadena AFB

Recommended Posts

Hi gents, my entry in this GB will be a Hasegawa’s venerable 30 year old kit of the F-15C in 1/48. She’ll be marked up as a machine operated by PACAF’s 18th Wing out of Kadena Air Force Base in Japan.

Great choice of subject and kit Mark.

The kit may be 30 years old but it still builds into an impressive looking model of the F-15, and the F-15 certainly fits the bill and was the top of the line for the non Soviet and Chinese forces in the region, I'm looking forward to your build.

Started on this build with the cockpit.

Added some detail to the joystick using a die and punch set.

Then sprayed the cockpit with Mr Hobby FS36231, masked off the relevant bits and sprayed the consoles flat black.

This was followed with a dry brush using silver.

I used Fine Molds plastic seatbelts to detail the kit seat.

That's all for now!

nice start!

did those Eagles still have Turkey feather exhausts? What are you gonna do 'bout them?

Cheers!

This is really "dealer's choice."  The 18th TFW received some of the first C-model Eagles starting in 1979. As best I can tell from references, they kept the 'feathered' exhausts until circa 1983-1984 (same general timeframe that they were removed from the entire US fleet). The colors and markings would have been consistent for pretty well the entire decade covered by this group build, so it's really just a question of whether Mark wants to build "from the box" (feathered exhausts, i.e. circa 1980-1983) or aftermarket ("featherless" nozzles, circa 1984-1989).

I’m gonna use a spare set of featherless exhausts from a Revell Strike Eagle.

Small update today.

Sprayed the Bay 5 area in green and did some detail painting in the cockpit.

I decided that it would be easier to detail and paint the instrument panel coaming if it was separated from the nose halves so out it came

Gave the cockpit and Bay 5 area a panel wash with enamels

Not sure if you have another round of finishing planned for Bay 5, but in case you didn't already know, the actual color (up to FY 1980 production) is a metallic green, very different from the classic "interior green."

Good photos in the excerpt from the Modern Eagle Guide posted here:

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, I don’t have the paint that’s called for available in my stash. But after looking again at photos, I think a trip to the hobby shop for paints may be warranted.

Did some detailing work today.

Installed a HUD projector to the IP coaming. I used a clear lens part from an aftermarket manufacturer called Wave. Sprayed it clear yellow and installed it into a hold which was drilled into the IP coaming.

Here is the coaming with the combining glass parts attached.

And a shot of the completed nose section.

The cockpit and the coaming look excellent Mark and your way of building the coaming really has made for a very effective and realistic look, which I may well copy when I eventually get around to building one of my Eagles.

Nice progress, I wouldn't mind doing a Kadena based jet myself (in 1/72) if I could hunt up the numbers for this one that was in Australia on exercise back in 1985 for ex Coral Sea

Were they not one of the options on one of the Hasegawa 1/72 F-15 releases Ray?

They were, in one of the twin seat boxings of the early issue of the kit. Not sure of which tail number was included. I will have to go through the stash to see if I have a part sheet still. I built one of these in the 80s as I recall.

Both the 1988 tool C and D featured 18th TFW markings -  78-0518 for the singleseater and 78-0564 for the dual.

So I could use the kit deals to make up the correct number. Time to dive into the stash.

Oh, and sorry for the minor thread drift Mark!  Cockpit is looks really nice!
