Evening chaps

Some.more advice is needed if anyone can help.id be most grateful.

Came to use the airbrush tonight and a couple of issues.

1. There was no air flowing through the brush. I've sorted this but it.doesnt seem to to be running properly.

2. I'm getting bubbles in the paint cup despite a thorough clean and tighten up. There's no blockages.

3. More troubling I'm getting paint coming through when I'm pressing down for paint only.

Can anyone give me a few pointers on what might be the issue please? I've stripped down and cleaned a good 3 times this evening but it's doing my head in so any help appreciated

Cheers

1. Take the valve apart, check all the seals, clean everything. If in the past some paint or dirty thinner leaked there you might have some blockage or maybe a seal is dragging.

2. Take the front part of the airbrush apart and check and double check for dirty parts. You either have a dirty or ruined seal on the nozzle or the nozzle cap is at least partly blocked (or you mismatched the nozzle and nozzle cap). I'm assuming the nozzle cap is properly tightened,

3. Cracked nozzle/partly ruined needle (you can save the needle with some polishing compound if it's what I'm thinking). Also you should check the needle seal. If there's paint on it the needle can have a hard time moving forward-backwards and the spring might not be able to push the needle all the way forward so it can block the nozzle opening. That way you can get paint out of the airbrush even if you only press down for air. Also make sure you didn't overtighten the needle seal. That can also cause the needle to have problems moving. When I reassemble the airbrush the nozzle goes in first and the needle afterwards. And when I tighten the needle "collar" I actually push the needle into the nozzle ever so slightly. If I don't sometimes the needle can move when I tighten the collar and it's not sealing the nozzle opening.

Thanks for the advice really appreciated.

Got the brush apart gave it a proper clean and seems to be working alright. Still getting a touch of paint coming through on air only every now and then which is strange.

I appreciate my problems are probably down to lack of experience.

I use my Evo/0.4mm virtually every day so can speak with some experience here: First buy one of these:

https://smile.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B06X9QKFCJ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

When it arrives,

Check your nozzle, if its dinged  at all, the needle won't seal properly= paint will escape when air starts

Check your needle, bent, kinked or anything other than  straight and true= paint will escape when air starts

Finally are you seating the the needle properly? To do this, attach the nozzle/air cap then GENTLY push the needle into place from the back and with just one finger tip, GENTLY push until you can feel it stop, use mk1 eyeball to see what you are doing. Push too hard, you'll ream the nozzle and need a new one. There should never be anything coming out of a nozzle of a double action airbrush except air until you pull back on the trigger.

There is a last wildly unlikely possibility, the white teflon needle  nozzle seal is shot, I have three H&S, gone through over a dozen nozzles , never happened yet but hey, you might have just beat the numbers. Again, use the magnifier to check the seal and make sure there's no grunge around the AB body where it sits. I use cellulose thinner based paint and put my brushes through an ultrasonic cleaner with gun wash so my airbrush insides are probably as clean as the day they were made.

I replace the 0.4mm nozzle at least twice a year but as I said, I hammer mine they are in use constantly for priming , spraying and gloss coating and I build 2-4 models a month minimum + paint/varnish bits of guitars etc ( check my sig links and you'll see what results I'm getting and the frequency of said so I can back up what I say)

As I replaced my dinged nozzle yesterday for exactly the same issue, I'm gonna guess you've got a dinged nozzle, try a spare ( you should always keep spare nozzles and needles handy, you will need them as they are easily damaged , especially with heavy use) BTW here my current AB set, all of them get used as I say constantly but the Evos take the most beating as these days the Sotar does all the details like 0.5mm mottles, the Iwata HP lays down my gloss coats occasionally and the Infinitys are just too pretty to get dirty!

At the risk of stating the risk of stating the obvious, most airbrush problems are lack of experience and user error, there are literally hundreds of internet pages on how to deal with any issue, Also be wary also of newbies or anyone with 0 builds/WIPS posted giving advice, ,I like to see the quality of work someone is achieving before I listen to their advice. This is a good starting point.

The best advice is I  can give is use the airbrush a lot, build a lot more models and like mine they become as easy and as instinctive as a screwdriver

PS keep your airbrushes spotless, there are many posts regarding ultrasonic baths, gun wash thinners ( if you safely use/store/dispose of them), paper points et al. the key to airbrush performance apart from skill, is maintenance and cleanliness. And I've seen what passes for clean in some folks brushes, especially those who shoot vallejo branded polyfilla et al...

Thanks Anil

I've another problem this evening. I've shot Paul @little cars a message tonight but wanted to ask here.

The brush was painting great last night but I've come to use it this evening and have no air flow whatsoever. There's air from the compressor to the attachment with the airbrush but after that nothing at all.

The trigger isn't bringing air through.

I've disassembled the brush and pressed down the action with a cocktail stick but still nothing.

I've un screwed the bottom to have a look and can't see an issue.

I'm struggling to see how it could have stopped working since last night.

Does anyone have any advice or know what might be the cause please.

Thanks in advance

Ok had this once with my sotar: Inside the air valve is a seal for the badger that expanded as  its not solvent resistant ta-da...incredibly all  you have to do is wait and it goes back to its original size.

Now anytime air aint coming out of an airbrush  but getting to it is usually something to to with the air valve ( or if you have an Iwata , general weirdness with its MAC valve if it has one)- dunno about H&S ones as mine have been accidentally soaked in neat gun wash overnight and worked fine..what are you spraying and when you say air is getting to the airbrush, have you unscrewed/pulled of the hose at the airbrush end  and checked ( don't do this with your reg set on anything more 5 PSI..) Its hard to kill and H&S valve based on my experience and as for faulty, again you need to be epically unlucky get get anything H&S thats faulty, these guys are near obsessive about QC.

Oh and some quick release fittings have an Iwata type MAC valve if yours has , you may have closed it, post a pic of your set up and details of where the hose hits the evo. Man its a shame your so far  awy in Crooked Spire land or you could nip down to me and I have spares to assemble another couple of evos!

I thought my air hose had gone wrong, compressor pumping away, no air at the airbrush.  Unscrewed the hose no air coming out, unscrewed at the compressor end, air definitely coming out of there.  It took a good few minutes of staring at the set up to spot the hose had got caught under the chair leg!

I'm just saying check the obvious too!

On a couple of occasions I've had to strip the airbrush including the trigger and air-valve as paint had somehow found its way back there and gummed it up.  Not had to do it since changing to pushing the dirty needle out the front, even though hardly anyone agrees with the theory.  It just made sense to me to not drag the dirty paint needle back right through al the airbrush workings.

The airbrush needle out the front is the right way to go with H&S, notice how paint coated the back of the needle is, as it comes out? Most folks who have Iwata's pull backwards as unlike the H&S with its big self centering nozzle, Iwata's have teeny tiny nozzles that need micro wrenches to tighten against on equally teeny o-rings and nozzles  instantly disappear the minute you take them off. Most Badgers are built the same as H&S but folks still like yanking their needles backwards, go figure.

In my case I strip the my Evo/Infinity's down to their parts in 30 seconds after each spray/color, put the stripped body, nozzle and color cup in a gunwash bath thats popped in an ultrasonic cleaner for 3 minutes, then left to air dry if not needed immediately. I actually assemble it at the beginning of  each daily spray session, checking everything is seated properly, spotless, working smoothly and taking a minute to "bond" with it!

It sounds weird but the man who runs my vintage restoration body shop does this and has been doing since 1961! He says it calms the mind, lets you "feel & understand" the tool and the job to be done plus it also makes sure that everything is spotlessly clean...the younger sprayers use the time to look at car/cat/human porn on their mobiles while he does his Zen setting up.

Oh I don't  put any blue lubey goop into any airbrush ever. If you need to grunge up a perfectly good airbrush with lube goop, try Badger Regdab, its as nasty in the long term but its clear not blue...handy if you get it on your clothes: fancy this happening in your airbrush?
