Hi Dave.

That Tamiya Red Lead Oxide is looking fantastic. It's almost a shame to cover it up.

The rubber tyres on Tiger I's and KT's etc were an integral part of the suspension system, absorbing shock, decreasing pressure on the components and smoothing the ride for the crew and increasing accuracy when firing the main gun on the move.

However, it was soon realised that the high number of closely-packed wheels and their large areas of contact with the extra wide tracks performed perfectly well without the rubber tyres.

So, whilst there may have been a shortage of high quality rubber, and this may have further influenced the decision to 'do away with them' the more pertinent reason was that they were uneccessary. (Certainly for the Tiger I late and the KT)

Thanks Badder.

The rims of the wheels wouldn't have black edges like those on the Panzer IV for example but would just be a metallic colour, is that right?

The entire wheel would have been painted, including the rims. The paint on the rims/circumference of wheels (the contact areas with the tracks) would be worn away almost immediately exposing bare metal. What colour that would be is always an area of fierce debate. Some say silvery steel, but I lea,n towards the colour of polished manganese-steel which is more of a ahiny reddish brown. This reddish brown is often mistaken for rust. The same issue of colour arises with the tracks, but again, they are made from manganese-steel.

Having said all of that, worn tracks do look good if the treads are silvery, but silvery wheel rims look awful.

At the end of the day, it's a matter of personal preference.

Thanks badder. I’ll maybe try a dark metal sort of colour on the wheels - the weathering/mud I plan to add will probably cover most of them up anyway!

Some progress. Decided to paint and finish the model in stages so today I worked on the lower hull. Camouflage was sprayed on and once dry, I added a dark wash across various panels and around the wheels. I left one of the wheels in the primer as I like the factory look of it. The exhausts were weathered, the jack etc added and further dirt/rust stains added. Tracks went on, mud on, then I added some white Tamiya pigment to give a sense of some frost/snow that would gather on the tank.

Some chipping on the rear:

Upper hull dry fitted:

The new Tamiya paints appear to be a better shade than their predecessors.

Weathering materials used:

The Vallejo mud is nice and thick and gives a 'wet' look.

More soon.

Thanks Stix.

Back from RIAT yesterday and off work until Thursday so a bit more done.  Painted the upper part of the hull and fitted to the lower part. Added a few details and then got to it with the weathering. I added some of the Tamiya primer decanted from the rattle can along the areas that are missing the side skirts. Mixture of washes and pigments for the rest. Oil drum and discard 88mm shells on the rear probably not very realistic but I like the detail it adds to the kit.

Another few hours at the bench today and we're almost there. I'd sprayed the yellow on the turret last night so this morning I sprayed the camouflage. Blu-tack and masking tape used:

Once the green and brown were sprayed, I added the decals (grand total of 2 for the turret) gave it a flat coat, then added washes and weathering followed by the extra kit. The ammunition belt from the Eduard set is a nice touch:

Base was pre-made and from everyone's favourite auction site. I'll be spraying some light coats of white onto this to replicate a more wintery Belgium in 1944. What are your thoughts on the foliage? Too much, too little, about right?

Cheers

Looking good Dave the foliage looks just right, if you white wash would you still use the foliage.

Thanks mate.

Will just be a light coat of white onto the base to replicate some frost/snow on the ground.

Calling this one done. Happy enough with how it turned out. I do enjoy weathering armour, brings it to life!

Thanks to all who commented, followed and provided tips and information. I've a Panther in the stash that I'm itching to get built now.

Hi Dave,

I love the camo pattern you came up with. I still haven't tried ANY 3-colour scheme, but I'd be well happy with one as good as yours.

I'm not too sure about the Seafoam foliage TBH, I think it's great for making actual trees and shrubs, but only after it's been given a spray with dilute PVA and a sprinkle with herbs. Obviously, you're depicting an 'wintry' scene, so I'd suggest sticking a few 'orange brown' leaves on your Seafoam - late autumn leaves that haven't yet fallen off. I think that would break up the 'unformity' of the Seafoam's structure and improve the look (and also add to the camo-effect) Having said that, what you've done ISN'T bad at all. I'm just being pernickety!

Thanks Badder. Scheme sprayed as best I could given Tamiya’s lack of painting instructions

I’ll maybe try and adjust some of the foliage but I actually thought it looked ok straight from the box!
