46 year old decal time...

The operating table is ready, everything's laid out... will the patient survive? :worry:

I'm gonna say yes, and to boot, those decals will look great!

Your support worked! Thanks chaps! Phew.

The decals were fine. I was impressed how well they worked, considering their age and less than ideal storage (box in the loft). Registration is OK (the fin flashes aren't perfect) but generally good. Colour is good, a bit yellow on the underwing codes but hey, it's a 50 year old FROG (well, Hasegawa - but the decals are FROG?) and I can live with that. But are they THICK! Difficult to bend them, Microsol didn't do a lot and frankly I'm not sure it did the decals much good. The thickness and the lack of any effect with Microsol has led to some inevitable silvering. The side roundels didn't want to conform to the domed engine intake shape - and why, many years ago, did I have to complicate things by opening up the air intake suction doors? Anyway, they're almost all on and I'm much relieved.

Anything i should look out for, any kind of pitfalls or issues ?

A slightly difficult question as I started it about 45 years ago! I don't recall any particular issues with the fit.

If you look at my early posts in this thread you can see I used a lot of filler around the front engine housings. I don't think FROG (actually Hasegawa who made the moulds) got the profile of these quite right where they join the main fuselage, both above and below. If you look at Paul A H's excellent 1/72 Airfix Harrier, the line is much smoother, and this makes quite a bit of difference with the upper/lower camouflage demarcation.

The panel lines are raised which I removed and re-scribed them.

There's almost no cockpit detail.

Apart from those points, the plane conforms well to the plans I have.

There may be other things wrong, but I haven't looked for them, I'm building it as it is.

Hope this helps! I'm thinking about 'The Year I was Born GB', but can't find much in 1955 that inspires me!

Cheers!

Hi folks,

Almost there! I keeps saying that, so I thought I 'd better post a pic to show where I am;

DSCF1176

She's had a coat of Xtracrylix Satin Varnish airbrushed over the Xtracolor enamel and decals, I was very impressed with the satin varnish. What's left are all the bits and bobs; canopy, u/c, drop tanks, cockpit details.

I'm hoping to make some good progress today before family duties and socialising take over my life for a while!

Cheers

  • Johnson changed the title to F273 Hawker Siddeley Harrier G.R. Mk.1 - Finished

A hard days night work.

I'm knackered, I think it's done. Only 46 years late! Not perfect (are they ever?). The ejection sofa, sorry seat, could be a lot better. And I'm still trying to select a pilot. The chap (or lady!) FROG provided was a bit small, about 4' 2", I've read of other FROG pilots being a bit short!

But it's been great fun! Thanks everyone for your support!!! :lol:

Here's a couple of pics;

Should hit the gallery tomorrow.

Cheers!

They’re never too late when finally finished, even after 46 long years! I must say there’s a good chance this kit would not have been built so well had it been completed all those years ago. This whole Harrier journey makes a fascinating conversation starter and we are all happy that you decided to dig her out, ask the question and see it though. It would also have to place very high up in a much delayed KUTA contest!

Cheers and well done.. Dave
