fightersweep
Hi all; Just picked up some Red Pegasus 1./72 G-HUNT decals from our own Paul J. I'm no Hunter expert I'm afraid, but what would the recommendations be for the best kit to use? I'm guessing the Revell F.6 or FGA.9 kit, but what would I need to do to get either kit to F Mk.51 configuration? I believe G-HUNT had the dog's tooth leading edges fitted later on, but I plan to build the earlier incarnation. Are there any other mods I'll need to do? Thanks in advance; Steve
Work In Progress
Being an F.51 it *should* have had the same low powered Avon as the F.4, but it was clearly an aeroplane modified at various times so I can't give chapter and verse for its lifespan. This has implications for the tailpipe of any: kit intended as a, F.6 or later, i.e. with the high powered 200-series Avon, but the whole question of Hunter tailpipes is fuzzier than you might expect. Old thread here discussing the subject: https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/446-hunter-tailpipescones/ Bottom line for me would be to ignore the tailpipe and just build straight from the box, apart from carving off the leading edges if you want to do that. But I am a slapdash peasant so you might want to take a more diligent approach.
71chally
I'm kinda with WIP on this, in 72nd the two inch diameter difference of the orifice is tiny in 72nd and it wouldn't bother me. The hard bit to quantify and to rectify is that bottom fuselage line in the jet pipe tail cone, which is more upswept to the rear on the small bore Hunters, being a smoother transition on F.6s onwards. I've often wondered if the jet pipe also sits comparatively slightly lower in the fuselage on big bore Hunters as that upsweep in the tail cone seems to more than compensate for 2 inches on the smaller engines. fightersweep
Thanks for the reply Gents! Much appreciated! I think I shall go for the Revell kit as it looks pretty decent. I wouldn't have picked up on the up sweep on the rear fuselage, so that is helpful. As you say though, 1/72 it must be pretty marginal. Plowing through the G-HUNT photos now. Luckily, there's a lot of them online! Regards; Steve
Black Knight T33
G-HUNT was a Danish F.51 which was the export version of the F.4. To model it you will need to remove the dogtooth leading edge of the wing & the tail chute housing/tail pipe as it was a 100 series Avon engine. FYI, I am responsible for the decals for G-HUNT, G-FURY, G-FIRE & the Black Knight T33 G-OAHB being produced by Keith at Red Pegasus. Since his passing his entire database has been taken over. The current owner is slowly releasing some Reno racers & as yet ahs not replied to my messages regarding the aeroplanes I commisioned Keith to make.
