1/72 Airfix Westland Whirlwind fighter with Airwaves cockpit etch, and another one as a spare, because I know what I'm like with etch

Hi All

A splutter of progress.

I want the canopy open on the one with the etch, so it's off to the Chop Shop

DSCF8388.jpg

And breathe out

DSCF8389.jpg

It's quite thick

DSCF8390.jpg

All tagged up awaiting their tail bands.

DSCF8391.jpg

I'm going to do the old one with neat Tamiya XF-21 Sky as that looks quite close to the decals

DSCF8393.jpg

The new(er) one will have 25% White added to get it close to the DKdecals

DSCF8394.jpg

Right shade, but looks a little light. We'll see.

The Chop Shop seems to be a succesful enterprise. Do they take orders?

Yes they take orders, although they can't give a definite turnaround period or if you'll get it back at all!

Anyhoo, some progress of sorts

The bands and props were done in their respective colour mixes, backplates swapped to show the diferences

DSCF8395.jpg

No, not as much as I thought either.

Ho hum.

The tail bands were masked off with some conveniently proportioned masking tape

DSCF8396.jpg

DSCF8397.jpg

And both undersides were shot with Tamiya XF-83 Medium Sea Grey 2, diluted 50/50 with their X20-A thinners

DSCF8398.jpg

I'm beginning to warm to their paints, even with the mixing and quick drying.

There they shall rest until I squeeze in some more Lab Time.

Hi All

A famine or a feast!

Although both aircraft have the same colour schemes, they're reversed

DSCF8399.jpg

That shouldn't be confusing at all, should it?

Lower masking, next build will be masking free...

DSCF8400.jpg

The oldie gets Tamiya XF-82 Ocean Grey 2, the noob XF-81 Dark Green 2

DSCF8401.jpg

I seem to have left the green canopy ajar, hope none of the paint got in

Now then, if I cut each of them along the camo lines, and glue them back in the right pattern, I should get two done with no more masking :hmmm:?

Well, it sounds like a reasonable assumption at least!

I'm very curious how that will turn out.

Hi All

Surprise morning in The Lab!

I'll possibly save that experiment for another day

Anyhoo, progress

Easy Peasy Maskeroony

DSCF8408.jpg

Now then, working from the oldie B&W diagram, with a reversed scheme, the opposite base colour, and waning sanity :hypnotised:

DSCF8411.jpg

Guess it must have worked out ok in the end

DSCF8409.jpg

DSCF8413.jpg

DSCF8414.jpg

DSCF8410.jpg

These Tamiya colours are very opaque, one is green over grey, the other is grey over green

DSCF8415.jpg

A couple of touch-ups, the exhausts done, the stickers and wheels on, and they're done.

Tamiya colors are great, that's for sure. Even though I dabble with Mission Models, MrPaint, Xtracrylix and all other, I always know what to do with Tamiya (and Gunze, since it's the same stuff more or less)

Both Whirlwinds turned out AWESOME!

Hi All

A quick round-up of some short sessions.

Nearly forgot the yellow strips

DSCF8436.jpg

The PE inserts hide the seams well

DSCF8437.jpg

There's some more PE for the upper wing surface, but as it looks out of scale compared to the engravings, I'm going to leave it off

DSCF8438.jpg

And it's already painted anyway.

There's also some for the underside

DSCF8439.jpg

But I can't seem to make head nor tail of it, so that goes in the spares tray too

I did get the cockpit finished and the control column in

DSCF8440.jpg

Next was the decals

DSCF8441.jpg

I had to mix and match as the DK set were missing a couple. Marked as 39 on the diagram, they're the only ones not on the sheet!

Anyhoo, they are lovely to apply, a thin soft film that can't be picked up on a brush as it folds itself round everything

DSCF8442.jpg

These are just on by themselves, pressed down with a rolling cotton bud, lurvley

The oldie got some tarting up too

DSCF8443.jpg

And that's where they'll sit for a couple more days.

Those under wing etchings are ment to be bomb racks.

Thanks fatalbert, I thought they were part of the wing structure like the etch parts for the upper wing skin. I'm not loading them up, so no worries about leaving them off.

Before you stick the props on may I suggest drilling out the front of the exhaust flame suppressors. With the spinners in place you'll just see the semicircular inlets

Hi James, yes good call. I haven't got them quite as delicate as yours as I suspect it would split the seams, but they're close

DSCF8447.jpg

I managed to get a coat of matt varnish on them

DSCF8448.jpg

And removed the canopy masking

DSCF8450.jpg

DSCF8451.jpg

Legs on next, then off they go!

Hi All

Legs on

DSCF8453.jpg

The doors were split down the centre, but didn't seem to have a definite location for the open position

DSCF8454.jpg

Cannons in the nose and a length of Uschi Superfine

DSCF8456.jpg

DSCF8457.jpg

That Uschi is 0.001" (0.0245mm) scale 1.7mm ish, is that too thin?

Anyhoo, the same for the new one

DSCF8458.jpg

And finally, the last piece of useful etch, the access ladder gets a coat of black

DSCF8460.jpg

A blob of CA and it droops into position

DSCF8461.jpg

So that's them then, I've glued the wheels fixed as they were wobbling around like a Toon Lass on a Saturday night

DSCF8462.jpg

I'll aim for a RFI on my next visit.

Thanks for your company, see you soon.
