The ICM Dornier 217 N-1 arived today and as im in the finishing throws ofon my Aims Ju 388 conversion  48063017428_42dfe08129_b.jpgP1030159 by Alistair Pearce, on Flickr

I feel it safe to start another project .

The ju388 was started in Jan 18 and haas been an on and off project .

I have had the Revell 217E-5 kit and lone Star 217 N-2 conversion in the stash for a number of years and as the likely hood of ICM producing this mark in the near future it seems its now or never so going to go big and do both at once .

I may get some aftermarket bits for the ICM like belts and another owl Radar set but will be OOB in the main as the coversion project will take up lots of time .

Good luck with this project!  I've contemplated something similar.   I have the B-25, B-26 and A-20 WWII twins all in 1/48.   I've thought of building them all at once, in a sort of assembly line approach.   Good start here!👍

Thanks Gary . This is my intention  .half as much paint mixing and wastage ....i hope .

Looks like a great project. I like the early German nightfighters, so will try and keep up with this one.

Thanks Greg . Yep theres something about them and the night airr war .

Not Dornier related but the Aims Ju388 has been completed and taken to display cabinet so work bench isnow empty ......YIPPPPEee.

Now at long last iv got a Ju388 .not perfect as some decal silvering but well up to my satisfaction .

I bet ICM bring one out next month !

Opening the bag of Lone Star resin parts i have had a nasty suprise ,some of the resin has a bad case of air bubble pox

I have contacted Mike at L/S but as yey had no reply ,however if i have to rectify this nose i have two ideas

1. remove existing detail and replace with new out of plastic card and brass

2. repare with super glue/talk

Thinking about it now it makes sense to try for a repare and if that doesnt work go for new scratch built detaile .

I honestly think remove and re-build is going to be the most satisfying option...

Brass tubing will be sharper and stronger..

Nice 388 by the way. This is based on a Dragon Ju 88 (is there a WiP)? Wonder if it'd fit an ICM kit?

Yep ,i think you are right .I have been looking at refrences and the use of some brass tube will be far superior . Have got the icm nose to help as well .

Im going to aim for something like this

I have done a dryrun on the main parts to see how the fit is . There are plenty of opertunities to get this wrong as the plastic guides in the fuselage are very sloppy and it is easy to glue something in the wrong position ,however ,get them in the correct position and it seems to be a dam good fit .

From a comparison with the revell kit detail is rather soft and there are some weird shaped radio equipment on the side walls .

Going to take a further look at the L/S nose and then sand it smooth .

I have removed the deformed resin FuG 202 radar mounting points and replaced with some brass tube with an i.d of 1.00 so the owl resin will slot inside but with a little slop so they can be alined .

The 20mm gun ports have been made from some 2.00 mm tube .

I have left the spent ammo case shutes as i will make new ones after the nose is in position as this area is likely to have lots of surgery at a later date .

now another uggly resin pox

This area has equipment relating to the gun controlles .  my first thoughts wre to leave as is as will probably not be seen ,however i am now thinking that i will remove it all and start from scratch .

here is a comparison with the ICM part wich shows how soft the detail is .

I'm waiting for my Do 217N to arrive. Should be in a few days. I think it will be best for me to wait for an Eduard set to show up. One thing I have noticed  is the fuselage parts in the ICM kit is made in such a way that we might finally see a Do 217K or M. I think they would be wise to do a K before an E as there's never been one.

By the way, well done on getting the Ju 388 done. Looks real nice.

I will be watching your build.

Good work on the nose restoration... that'll look good and be much stronger than the original. I always avoided the Lone Star conversion (I have a Koster one somewhere) as the quality was often totally abysmal.. your photos do little to revive LS's reputation..

It looks like it's been cast in cheese that's started to melt....

With the nose rectified i feel i can move on with both 217's together.

My ICM kit turned up today. I'm not disappointed with the cockpit detail. I find it sharp enough for me.

One thing I did notice is there appears to be a bomb bay which is a good sign for future versions.

Have you seen any masks around yet? I don't think Eduard has made any yet.

Also the Owl aerials are hard to find now.

How is this one going?

Well there has been a bit of a hold on this due to holidays etc getting in the way ,however  here are some progres pics .

Cockpits have almost been completed and the L/Star resin glued into place on the Revell kit .

Top ICM bottom Revell

The ICM kit comes with no engine throttle controles

Top Revell

The fold up seat on the revell needs to be removed

The Revell kit has some excellent detail on the radio equipment but as i mentiond earlier the ICM detail is rather soft ,almost as if they are expecting you to use an eduard etch set .

Sods lore ..Aims are bringing out a resin conversion for the ICM kit

To quote Johns post

Hi everyone, a first look at the new AIMS 1/48 Do 217 N-2/R22 conversion for the excellent ICM Do 217 N-1 kit. It is not ready for sale yet as I wanted the set to include some additional photo etch parts like the cabin door - these will be with me soon. Total for the conversion is £22.50 plus shipping and if you are interested please email me at [email protected]
Many thanks, John

I doubt any more of these Lone Star conversions will ever be completed but as iv got this far im going to get it finished .

Alistar not to hijack the thread but could you post more photos of the beautiful Ju-388 AIMS conversion?  If you don’t mind me asking, which donor kit did you use?  Thank you.

Hi Mottlemaster

I just so happen to be working on the exact same Revell Do217 + Lone Star conversion -> Dornier 217N-2. You probably have noticed by now (unless your example is in much better shape than mine) that the rear cockpit fairing is pretty much useless. Seems to me the best way to go about fixing it is to just use the kit canopy and NOT cut off the rear portion - rather figure out a way to turn the round turret opening into a square hole, IOW use the complete canopy.

Interestingly the nose replacement casting on my conversion kit is in much better shape (minimal bubbles) - if Lone Star was a mainstream company I would have said perhaps yours was made on a Friday afternoon, but like most garage Industry things they were likely all done on a Sunday afternoon. Perhaps some beer got into the resin mix in your case?

Some nice modelling projects there.     ICM + AIMS to the rescue, I have all of the above including that dodgey Lone Star dubiously resin set. Looking forward to seeing further work and the journey you take.
