Alcock and Brown

One hundred years ago today John Alcock and Arthur Brown took off from St. John's. Newfoundland, in a Vickers Vimy. Fifteen hours and 57 minutes later they crashlanded in a bog in County Galway. having made the first transatlantic flight - eight years before Lindbergh.

Whitten-Brown never set foot in an aeroplane again! 

It was pretty hard going, especially having to repeatedly climb out on the Icy wings to chip the ice off the carb intakes while holding onto the rigging wires. 

The fact that he had polio made it all the more difficult. 

 

The Hawker + McKenzie-Grieve epic failure is quite an adventure too.!
