We used to have what my Father called his D-Day Jerkin which was a kind of sleeveless jerkin made of canvas with ammo pouches, small and large pack built, bayonet, entrenching tool attachment points and internal pockets across the lower back.  The pouches were secured with wooden toggles and string loops, the front of the jacket with brass belt catches.  The jerkin was a chocolate brown colour with light khaki webbing straps.

I think they were issued to some assault troops for D-Day my Dad (who was FAA) was issued his for his training for Operation Olympic.
