1/72 Heller J-21A SAABmouth

Hi All

This turned up in a job lot

DSCF8176.jpg

And something caught my eye

DSCF8177.jpg

No, not the spoons, nor the cute opening box, it's the mouth (Saab is Swedish for shark? Yes?)

There's only about twenty parts and those two colours, so a nice straight forward build.

Wheel wells painted and the main wing setting

DSCF8181.jpg

You'll never notice those ejector pin marks.

Interestingly, it would appear that this aircraft was at the forefront of ejector seat development, to get the pilot clear of the shredder following him.

Comments and suggestions welcome

Cheers

there is some info here on colours, though what's on the spoons looks good, as do the decal colours, lots get the Swedish blue/yellow colours wrong....

and a walkround here

http://www.ipmsstockholm.org/magazine/2000/02/stuff_eng_detail_j21.htm

While restored, the colours are accurate.

the J-21 is an interesting  plane, one of only two piston engined types that was successfully re-engined with a jet engine, becoming the J-21R

The other is the Yak-3/Yak-15 if you are curious.

As far as colour goes, are the legs and door insides the same as the lower surface, ie pale blue grey, or are they just light grey?

AFAIK, it's underside colour.

this period colour shot of a J-21R shows this

saab-21.jpg

this is the sharkmouth one, which I found when searching for the above

Unknown-1.jpeg

EDIT now I notice the front leg here looks darker tonally. probably the upper surface green.

I'll see if I can find my J-21 book and see what that shows.

Great choice Steve built one a while ago only dislike was the canopy which can be tricky.look forward to seeing that scheme come together.

Hi All

Main parts assembled, the cockpit is just the IP, control stick and a seat

DSCF8200.jpg

I hollowed out the air intake, and the wing root fit isn't bad at all, much better than I'd come to expect from other online builds

DSCF8201.jpg

The underside just needs a bit of work on the front and a touch on the rear (don't we all)...

DSCF8202.jpg

And it seems the couple of screws in the nose were enough

DSCF8203.jpg

Boom seams on the next session then into the booth!

Hi All

A quick round up of progress.

I got the canopy on, quite fiddly to get it line up but I think it should be ok

DSCF8222.jpg

Topcoat and nose done

DSCF8225.jpg

I think the colours work well relative to the variations of the actual aircraft

DSCF8226.jpg

Main decals on, nice and thin and conforming well

DSCF8227.jpg

Those thirty-odd invisible decals are teeny white stencils.

Looks familiar...

DSCF8228.jpg

It also has to be cut round the nose gear flap

DSCF8229.jpg

However, Micro Sol to the rescue once again, and all given a coat of W&N Matt awaiting final assembly

DSCF8230.jpg

I'll let it go completely off before finishing.

See you soon!

Really quick (and very good) work on this unusual subject.
