Shelliecool
I have begun work on the Halifax's radial engines. Airbrushing them Vallejo aluminium, and then hand painting the anthracite pipes. Oh, and I have worked out how to use village photo's, so it's bye bye Photobucket 😄 Edited July 8, 2019 by Shelliecool
dogsbody
You may be aware of my anal-retentive issue with the colours of Bristol engines, especially the gear casings, but please disregard Revells instructions for the colour of Part# 74. This should be painted a semi-gloss black, not their grey concoction. Chris 2

Revell seem to love the idea of modeller's mixing different percentages of colours!🙄 How about the inside of the cowling? I think Revell suggest mixing green, yellow and some other colour??? Thanks, Michelle.

Thanks, Michelle. I'm not sure what the Air Ministry wanted, but I'd go for whatever you have that's close to what you used on the interior of the fuselage. You'll not be able to see very much past the prop blades and the engine anyway. Chris 1
Shelliecool
Tonight I have airbrushed the gear casings (Vallejo black), and the inside of the cowlings (Vallejo interior green). Once dry the engine build can continue.
Shelliecool
Since my last post I have constructed the cowlings and secured them and the engines to the aircraft. These went together with relative ease, and required a small amount of Sanding Along the seams. I have also built the exhausts and guns, which I have primed with Vallejo primer. Finally I had to carefully cut the undercarriage doors in half as I am building the aircraft with her wheels down. This went pretty smoothly, and after a quick sand I blasted them with primer. My apologies for using Photobucket again, I am having problems logging into village.
dogsbody
Ah! I was going to ask about the photos. They are small and have that stupid Photobucket watermark, making it hard to see the wonderful work you have done. Chris
Shelliecool
First things first, I have managed to get into my Village account 😀 so better photography can resume. Tonight I have airbrushed the inside of the undercarriage doors, using my interior green. Then I airbrushed the tips of the props yellow, and turned my attention to the exhausts. These are airbrushed Anthracite, and once dry will have rust added to the centre sections. Finally I gave my guns a coat of Gun metal, which is really thick and took quite a bit of thinning. So far so good.

Brandy
I second Ced, or said it second, whatever. It's what he said anyway. Great stuff! Ian 1
Bedders
I second Ian, and therefore third Ced. Really useful WIP this one, as I'm keen to do a Halibag for a mate of mine whose dad flew them. Justin 1
Shelliecool
Since my last post I have hand painted the 'rust' sections on all 4 exhaust pipes, for this I used Revell rust acrylic. I then masked up the yellow tips on my propeller's, and airbrushed them black, using Vallejo black. Once dry I removed the mask, I'm really happy with how the props look. Finally, I have given the aircraft a light coat of Vallejo primer. I was concerned it may be too warm and the paint may dry really quickly. However, I'm happy to say it sprayed fine and is settling nice and smooth.
Cees Broere
Very nice build. I would suggest you paint the insides of the wheeldoors black too, as was in vogue with Handley Page's finest at the time. Anything that could be exposed from below was black such as the bombardier's area, the bombbay and undercarriage bays. Working on a FM Halifax at the moment, yes I am a masochist, but hey it's a 1/48 Halibag. Cheers Cees 2
Shelliecool
Over the last few days I have slowly been preshading the build. Slowly mostly because the heat was causing the paint to dry in the cup. So far so good.
Shelliecool
Over the last few nights I have continued preshading the build. Luckily the temperature has dropped a little so the paint has not dried so quickly in the cup. There are a great many panel lines on the Halifax, which in a fashion I have preshaded. Next onto masking up ready for some colour.
Shelliecool
Having carefully masked up the Dark green areas of camouflage, I have been slowly building up the coats of Vallejo Dark Earth. After the first coat had dried I applied another coat. Finally mixing in some white to lighten the colour and add highlights. I have since removed the mask, and the build is drying nicely in the cupboard. The Vallejo Dark Earth acrylic sprayed really smoothly as predicted (I have used it on other builds), I mixed it 5:1 with Vallejo thinner.

AdrianMF
This is looking great! There is a ton of detail on the new Revell Halifax and the Mk III doesn't have the Mk I engine problems that gave everyone apoplexy when it came out. Looking forward to the camouflage unmasking. PS When I view some of your posts the formatting is a bit strange, eg on post #33 and #39, I think it's because you don't have a new line before you paste your image links. Your last few posts don't seem to have that problem so I guess you have worked that out. I like looking at the images wherever they come out on the page

Shelliecool
Having been away for 2 weeks I had to dust the cobwebs off both builds yesterday. With the Dark earth dry, I have masked it up, sealing in the edges of tape with Quick shine (to eliminate bleeds). She is now ready for the first coat of Dark green.

Shelliecool
Over the last 2 days I have airbrushed the Dark green sections of the camo pattern. For this I am using Vallejo Dark green, mixed in a ratio of 5:1 with thinner. I am 2 light coats in, one more, then some highlights and we should be there.
