German Jets

What kits in 1/72 are the best of second world war German jet aircraft? I have Airfix's 262, but I'm after mainly a He162, Me163, Ho229 (I know of the Revell kit, but is there anything better?) and a He280.

Informationabout other kits like Ar234s would be useful

Thanks :)

RS Models make some German jets. I can't comment on the quality, never having built any of their kits.

I like the Academy Me 163. Concerning the Arado Ar 234 most people today probably mention the Dragon kit. But the old Frog kit isn't bad and have some nice options...

I had the Revell Horten, it was very nice.  Dragon kits look very good in the box but have a reputation of being difficult to assemble.  This may be overstated. You will certainly find the Frog Arado  crude and clumsy in comparison.  Mine remains unfinished (but that's not unique in itself).  I've made several RS kits and would recommend them.

I think Huma made a respectable He280 but that might be difficult to find.

My votes:

He 162: Dragon

Me 163: Academy

Ho 229: Revell

Ar 234: Dragon

He 280: no knowledge.

Not sure why you'd want a better kit of the Horten than Revell's: it's a comparatively recent kit and very nicely detailed.  I have a part-built Dragon Ar 234: no building problems beyond the ordinary and nicely detailed.  My He 162 is still in the box.

Revell's Ho229 is nicely detailed and builds into a great kit

(I have no comment on accuracy though, since I don't have it in stash)

But if You want a "Turbo-Mega-Kit-3000" of the same aircraft, You could wait a bit for this bad boy:

RS Models has a He-280 which is more recent and probably a little more advanced than the quite decent HUMA kit. There are a number of reviews, even vidoes, on the net.

As I mentioned in my post above.

Not an area i have a ton of experience with, but for whatever my opinions are worth:

The Academy Me 163 is one of the very best 1/72 kits that company ever made. Includes the little transport tractor, and gives you the option for the 163S 2-seat trainer, too. Absolutely can’t go wrong with that one.

The Revell Ho 229 is superb, though as noted this one is in the Zoukei “to-do” pile if you want to wait a year. Or four, LOL.

The Dragon He 162 is good but you will have to work through some fit issues. The wing roots are particularly bad, it’s as if a magic force field holds them away from the fuselage, in spite of lacking any obvious points of contact.

For what it’s worth, the Hobby Boss “Quick Build” He 162 and Me 163 are quite acceptable for that type of kit.

There's also this one, though I don't know if it's available anymore.

Oops! I forgot to put the tailplanes into the picture properly. It's sitting on the instruction sheet.

The PM moulds are said to have been lost when their founder died and his family didn’t want to sell them, though I don’t know if anyone would actually have wanted to buy - would be a bit surprising considering their quality.

If you want to go down the Luftwaffe 46 route, Huma was a major player in that field but again those moulds appear to have been lost.

Would the venerable Revell ex Frog He 162 be a contender? Old, but should be reasonably easy to obtain.

Should've added which type I was referring to

Dragons He 162 was also available in a spiffy Mistel combo:

https://www.scalemates.com/kits/dragon-5002-mistel-5-he162a-2-w-arado-e-377a--108489

I have the RoG rebox in the stash:

https://www.scalemates.com/kits/revell-04145-mistel-5--135390

I''ll use a RoG Me 262 or Fw 190 for the Mistel, the He 162 will end up on her own wheels.

Cheers,

Andre

Sad...

I actually has the PM Ta-183. It's simple but not bad. I've got it when the Tamiya 1/48 kit came. It's almost done, some painting left to do. I couldn't decide on what camouflage scheme to paint. Funny is that it shares tail with the little Messerschmitt  P.1101 from Dragon... ;)

What to say about the accuracy (and painting schemes) if the airplane never was build?

As Tamiya decided to make it in 1/48 it for sure had something.

In 1/72 it is an nice little kit and it's sad that Tamiya didn't make one in 1/72...

There are rumours or city legend  that prototype of Ta 183 was completed in USSR, but it is not confirmed...

Nothing, and when we see at the market, which producer will regret that?

Wasn't it so that agents from the Allies including the Russians were hunting down German specialist in the months following the surrender? Kurt Tank escaped the Russians, the Americans got von Braun. It is a fascinating subject. There must be studies devoted to this subject.

Addendum: Found this title:

Operation Lusty: The Race for Hitler's Secret Technology by Graham M. Simons | 30 May 2016. Amazon lists three more books about the subject.

And the search go on: Operation Paperclips...

The Soviet equivalent was Operation Osoaviakhim

Quite easy to find information on the net.
