The top shot is of XW527 at St Mawgan mid 1980s with a training pod fitted, and yes they got camo'd with the missiles.

I love that full colour gloss finish, that's how an RAF Buccaneer should look to me!

Thanks for the location details James, and I totally agree with the sentiments regarding the early scheme, I think the same applies to the Phantom.

Yes it is James, in fact it's my photo from St Mawgan IAD 1985.   Coincidentally a couple of weeks ago I had a request for the image from the Pilot who saw the photo on Air Britain.

Hmm. Does anyone know what the weapons load will be in the Airfix RAF Buccaneer kit due later this year (fingers crossed)?

Having watched the 12 Sqn NATO OPEN GATE 1978 film any number of times, I'd like to do an aircraft in the right fit and play Vangelis at unreasonable volume while doing so.

Is there any current aftermarket to supply the Martels and datalink?

Not yet.  The preview images show a 208 Squadron jet in wraparound camouflage with underwing tanks and an AN/ALQ-101(?) pod and a rather anonymous ex Gulf War jet with a similar load.  Bearing in mind that 208, along with 12 Squadron, were the RAF maritime strike specialists I would hope that Airfix would include Martels as being representative of the type.  If they do it will give them another bite at the RN cherry with new markings.

The last iteration of the old Airfix Buccaneer included Martels but I can’t vouch for their quality or accuracy as my examples are presently buried somewhere in the Loft of Dooooommmmmmmm.👺🙄😖🤬

I got the boxing of the old Buccaneer from nearly 10 years ago that has weaponry for a Desert Storm aircraft but no Martels.

Sorry Steve, I could have sworn that they were a carry-over from the late-eighties/early-nineties boxing.  I may have mixed it up with the very ancient FROG kit........🥴

Strange, I have just had a look at mine as I am building this kit at the moment and there are certainly missiles in there. I think that they are Martel (No motor part for Sea Eagle) as there different types of heads to fit and also a data link. If I remember rightly all they did was add the Gulf and South African parts to the 1980s kit.

Well, that was embarrassing. I looked at the instructions and there's no reference to the Martels and datalink. Then I read the e-mails above and opened up the bagged kit - unopened for nearly a decade - and lo and behold, there are the bits and pieces I wanted on one sprue in the midst of it all.

Compare and contrast with IKEA, where what's in the instructions isn't always in the box...

All I now need is the new Buccaneer to hang it all from.

Saying which, aftermarket can still provide examples for a 208 bird later.

  • 1 year later...

Somewhat more than a year later after making a fool of myself, is there any news of a modern Martel/datalink fit for the new S2B kit, or do I have to source the things under wings from an older Airfix boxing off eBay?
