Spit Fan
When were the gas detection patches, seen on fighter aircraft during the Battle of Britain, discontinued? I have seen references to both the color, a yellow/green with red dope outline and shapes, circles, squares and diamonds but no time lines. From images and profiles it would seem that their usage begin to decline about December of 1940 and was gone with the change over to Ocean grey/ dark green/medium grey. Many thanks in advance.
Smithy
Paul Lucas states how they had nearly disappeared by spring 1941. Although you can see that there were still instances of them being seen after this, usually with squadrons inheriting older aircraft. For example 485(NZ) Sqn's Mk.IIs had the gas patches in summer 1941.
Ed Russell
Not related to the Battle of Britain but they appear to have been used in the MTO after the December 1943 disaster at Bari.

Ed Russell
More exhaustive than the wikipaedia article https://www.amazon.com/Nightmare-Bari-Liberty-Disaster-Coverup/dp/1889901210 "Pearl Harbor in the MTO"
