1/72 Mirage III RAAF

One more thought on the Mirage III family in model form...

Both the HPM/PJ and the Modelsvit kits are not cheap. They are very nice kits, well detailed and with interesting options. But cheap they are not, so much that a modeller could start considering a different option: the Kinetic 1/48 kit. The basic kit can be found for prices that are not much higher than the 1/72 kits and the Kinetic kit is pretty nice too.

This is exactly what I did for my RAAF Mirage plan ! Got a Kinetic kit from a dealer at a couple euro more than the price of the PJ kit and then found a 1/48 decal sheet going for around the same price of the HP 1/72 ones. Maybe I was lucky, but I'd say this more for the decals than the kit as the Kinetic kit is often offered at good prices by both European and Asian shops. And already includes an RAAF option.

Of course a lot depends on location, to modellers in Australia the HPM kit may be cheaper while for me it's relatively expensive.

As much as I'd love to work with 1/48, I'd rather keep everything the same scale and have enough space at the same time.  Although a Mirage III isn't particularly large, the and B-24 (and F-111 if I ever find one) that it will share the shelf with are.  I'll probably go with the HP at this stage, while keeping my eyes open for anything that pops up locally in the meantime.  Prices in Oz are high for almost everything.  The HPM is at the higher end of the scale of what I'd pay for 1/72, but still within what I'd consider a normal range, and the twin pack brings it to a lower price per plane.  At the end of the day I want a half decent model to join the line up on my soon to begun RAAF shelf. (The stash is steadily growing for that project.)

I'm in Melbourne also, so buying locally makes more sense than importing from Singapore.

What kind of time frame are we looking at before you have more in stock?

Hi,

If you are in a hurry, Models and Hobbies 4U list the kit as "in stock"

The are quite a way East in Boronia but perhaps a diversion on the way to Expo might make this less of a journey. Also dropping into Ikea with the wife isn't too much of a problem - treat it like a 1 to 1 kit build with one of their flatpacks 😀.

Edit - Just noticed that Models and Hobbies 4 U are trading at Expo - maybe they will have the kits there or you could ring them in advance and get them to bring one along for you for collection at Expo.

Hope to see you at Expo!

Cheers

I could scratch build a 1:1 scale house if I added up all the Ikea stuff I have built over the years!

The missus would like the Dandenongs, and I could "accidentally" discover the Boronia store on the way to/from those hills.  Much like the time I "accidentally" discovered a guitar store that had a Casino in stock when I detoured off a freeway for petrol one day. (My wife has this strange aversion to me driving more than 15km from home to buy anything)

Know what you mean, even for small subjects like a Mirage III 1/48 takes much more space. Generally I'm a 1/72 builder, but for a number of "selected" subjects I build the occasional 1/48.

Originally I wanted to use the HPM kit for the RAAF Mirage, and I don't mean the kit we're discussing, I mean the old short run kit made by High Planes.

Then the first of the "new" HPM kits arrived and I bought a couple, one to receive the RAAF decals of the short run and the other to build as a Mirage 5. I later also bought the RV kit to see what it was like. Finally when I found an offer for 2 Kinetic kits for very good price, I bought these.

Mine will be a grey/green aircraft, unit yet to be decided
