The under wing pylons on the F-104A/B/C/F's were perpendicular to the wing underside.

But later modified to be perpendicular with the ground, as far as I know

Then it would have been marked F-104B/D.

Cheers,

Andre

But apart an initial trial there was no small-finned two seater

Nice - I'm down for an 1/72nd set!

The first six B's were built with the small vertical tail and even without the ventral fin.

Surprising noone, they severely snaked at high speed, leading to the reinstatement of the ventral fin and enlargement of the rudder area.

Cheers,

Andre

Correct. As I said, Andre. Trial/prototype but nothing more than that :)

(...) Another item scheduled for August in the Limited Edition is a 1/48 scale kit called THE ZIPPER. It is a cover of the American jet fighter F-104C Starfighter by Kinetic. It features brassin parts and a decal sheet focused on units flying in the Vietnam War. These are aircraft that passed with the 479th and 8th TFW. Some will be done in the paint scheme they had in the US before moving to Southeast Asia. The Zippers will have interesting camouflage and markings, one of which belonged to a pilot who became an ace in WWII with P-38 Lightning. (...)

Have Eduard released any other Kinetic F-104's as a reboxing?

No, all of Eduards previous Starfighters have been the older but still nice Hasegawa kit. Hopefully they’ll re box a few more versions of the Kinetic kit.

Hypersonic Models - ref. HMR 48057 - Lockheed F-104A Starfighter update set

Source: https://www.hypersonicmodels.com/product/f-104a-late-update-set

Quote

This set contains the parts needed to build an accurate late type F-104A from the Kinetic F-104A/C kit. "Late" means that it's an airframe that was converted to the upward firing C-2 seat. Therefore you can either use the kit supplied seat or one of the various available aftermarket options.

The parts (all 3D printed) in this set are:

  • lower fuselage insert piece with different shell ejector port and vent louvres
  • aft fuselage panel with staggered hot air vents (not needed for all F-104A) with cutting mask template
  • "L"-shaped reinforcement doublers for the fuselage/cockpit area
  • detailed main instrument panel
  • control stick/grip with better detail and better proportions
  • throttle lever with more detail and better proportions
  • aft canopy brace/bracket (two supplied)

Received my Eduard Zipper but noticed that they they omitted the rear ECM sensor which is not present on the Kinetic sprues either.

 spacer.png

Does anybody know if Eduard plan on releasing a 3D or resin part? Or whether it is available as aftermarket somewhere else?

This is disapointing as the rear ECM pod is on thr box art and on the marking guides given in the instructions.

Thanks

Just double checked since I'm in the middle of building my 104C in SEA camo as a 1968 Udorn jet. Looks like the parts are B72/B73, present for my Kinetic A/C Kit.

Yes they indeed are in the kit as alienXcow said and Eduard instructions at page 7 tells you to glue them in.

You are right, they are parts 72 and 73 on sprue B. They don't look very accurate, as the real ones a bit beefier but that can be rectified.

However, I had a look at my instructions and Eduard make no mention of them on page 7 and blur them out in the sprue map.

Anyhow, it's an amazing boxing by eduard, I look forward to them cooperating with Kinetic on other kits!

Thank you for your contributions.

Thats interesting, maybe they made a mistake in the instructions and corrected it later, they appear in the instructions in their website.

That's fair. I contacted Eduard anyway. I'll see what they say but as long as they rectified it, it's all good for me. Thank you

Project Update, it's been a while! Things are ticking over, but much more slowly than to my liking, mostly because of delays in the supply of components made elsewhere.

The first new product to be released should be the F-104A (early) set for Kinetic, which includes all parts for the C-1 downward firing seat (developed in cooperation with Matt from Shrunk Craft). The set could have been released last year but is delayed because I wanted a new canopy to match the different de-mister tubing layout. A first batch of canopies is now finally cast by a contractor but I don't know when those will get here...

Next is the NF-104A conversion set, which again is/was a rather lengthy development and production as I opted for having a few parts produced by low pressure injection moulding rather than resin (most notably because of the wings). I'm expecting the first test shots next month.

Plus, I have two more F-104 related sets in development or planning, and of course, as ever, the A-3 wheel well set

On and off, I'm also working on something bigger, but not yet disclosed.

The Kinetic kit combo packages I announced months ago are not "dead" either, but it's taken ages to get it organised. Hopefully soon....

Some more details on my previous post:

Coming in the near future is an F-104B (and early D) conversion set for the Kinetic F-104D/TF-104G kit.

It will contain the downward firing C-1 seats, ejection rails, new IPs and coamings (the many different variants we're currently researching) and of course the characteristic 4-piece canopies without the 5th centre piece.

Originally, my intention was to do the canopies in injection moulded plastic, but unfortunately the (*just*) affordable solution was unable to do it at the required minimum plastic thickness and all other options were just too cost prohibitive for such a product. So instead they are now machine vacuum-cast in resin (which come on a sprue, like injected plastic and with very minimal clean-up). The masters were 3D printed and hand-prepared, i.e. polished to a high shine.

There will be a complete set of de-mister tubing, in the same way as for my upcoming A (early) set, pictured below.

Here's a sneak peak into the future (NF-104A injected parts)

Note these are test shots with slightly off temperature setting and the plastic a little too soft, leading to a couple minor problems, but I've been assured they'll be gone with the actual production parts.. But otherwise, everything is as, or even better than, expected. The surface detail is right on par with the Kinetic kit parts.

The long pitot boom is being manufactured at Master as we speak.

Amongst many other things, I'm currently working on getting the print setups for the 3D printed parts just right (stable and accurate prints, minimise print lines, transport protection, easy support removal...).

The final pieces in the puzzle of the upcoming F-104A (Early) set are now done: three different, optional coamings. On the left is a fully covered coaming with standard optical sight and periscope setup, middle is an earlier type with mostly open canvas, and on the right is a partially open coaming without sight unit, making it applicable to test airframes etc. The corresponding main instrumentpanel has the different shape distinctive for early 104's

I needed to make a couple of small CAD adjustments after these testprints but production printing of these has now started.

Next are the instructions.

Release hopefully soon...
