Minicraft 1/144th RAF Hercules C.5

Recommended Posts

My latest project is this Minicraft Hercules C.5 using the recent Caracal decals. The basic 'J' kit is obviously not strictly correct for an RAF machine so I made some alterations to it namely the large intake on the starboard side, the  bulge that sits underneath it, the small radomes and antennas on top of the fuselage along with modified cockpit windows and antenna on the fin. I also decided to put a couple of seats and a console in the cockpit.

The tail decals fitted really well but required a considerable amount of 'touching in' on the leading edge etc.

The model itself fitted quite well with the only problem being where you have to cut off part of the original kit's forward wheel bays to fit the modified ones.

Anyway, thanks for looking.

Very nice.  I wish that the Minicraft J series appeared more often, and you have just shown why!  The finish and display are top class.

Very nice! Would you say something on how you obtained such a realistic finish with the overall dark green?

Thank you all for your comments.

Firstly the green is a combination of shades from the Xtracolor range, namely X1 RAF Dk Green and X27 British Army Green. I wasn't happy with either as they were so I just mixed them until I was.  I think it was about 70/30 with the 70 being X1.

The darker panels in front of the wings and behind the doors is just Olive Drab X112.

Once everything had dried I mixed a couple of shades of Humbrol Green 30 and 116. These were then just randomly lightly sprayed in patches all over while at the same time highlighting some panel lines. The large centre area across the whole wing and centre fuselage was masked and then sprayed with a 50/50 mix of Humbrol 30 and 116.

I don't think there's any particular weathering pattern as all RAF C-130's seem to wear differently although they all have the darker panels in front of the wings.

For your perusal I've attached some photos I took recently and one I took of the actual aircraft at a Nightshoot a couple of years ago. In fact after looking at these again I'm going to add a few more bits and pieces of detail and weathering.

Thanks again for looking.

Gorgeous job,...... I`ve flown 47 Sqn airlines many times,....... your model really does look the part,....... now are you tempted to do the other schemes too?

I`d love this sheet in 1/72nd scale!

Cheers
