Windy37
Finally finished this piece of rallying history . The winning car on the 1985 Safari Rally , driven by Juha Kankkunen and Fred Gallagher . This was Kankkunens first World Rally win and the first Safari to be won at the first attempt . The kit was easy to build , decals easy to apply . My main problems came with lacquering . Some of the decals melted after being sprayed , as I mentioned in Work In Progress . I am pleased with the results , this being my first build in quite a while . The eagle eyed will spot the narrow rear tyre . The rears are wider than the front , but the kit contained 3 narrow and 1 wide tyre . Must have been a packing error ! Thanks for looking , Gary . The Marlboro decals were bought off e bay , from a seller in Hong Kong . The roof aerial is fuse wire after I snapped the kit one removing it off the spruce . I warm the tip with a lighter then let it melt it’s way into the roof . The narrow rear tyre can seen on this shot . I’m sure the actual cars would have had more underbody protection .... Some spot light and nudgebar detail . Notice the weld , almost invisible but great detailing . The spots all come with covers , so can be displayed either open or covered . I added the top stay bars by using fuse wire . This is Tamiyas 1992 Toyota Celica Safari Rally winner I built back in the 90s . It’s yellowing a bit now , but looks good still with its new cabinet mate !

Spiny
Good to see how this one has turned out. It's a shame about the wheel, but the rest of it looks spot on. Nice to see it with the old build too - not only do you have sister cars (almost), but you can see how you've moved on from the 90s. I know what you mean about the yellowing with age, although in my experience the decals are bigger culprits for that. I have a Zexel Skyline built in '92 which was probably my best build from my teens, but that has also lost it's brightness. Fortunately, it doesn't really detract from your Celica, which is only really noticeable due to the brightness of the new car.

Schwarz-Brot
great to see the 90s Celica side by side. Those Safari cars are really cool monsters. I like what I see, I really want to build one now. Do you have pictures of the 1992 online somewhere?

The kit is still available to buy . The Safari Rally always seemed to be a big deal for model kit companies as I have Safari spec Subaru, Mitsubishi and Ford models in my display . I remember back in the 80s and 90s reading about teams spending months in Kenya testing and developing cars specifically for the Safari Rally. Gary.
