Ryan B.
Did Desert Air Force P-40s have any equivalent sand/dust filtration system similar in purpose to the Vokes filters used on Spitfires and Hurricanes--or, indeed, the sand filters used on Me-109s and C.202s? Graham Boak
Allison argued that because the engine had a downdraught carburettor as o0oxed to the Merlin's updraught one, then sand ingestion wouldn't be a problem. I gather that this was wishful thinking.
Hornet133
Grahame is correct in saying no problemo was rather ambitious on the behalf of Allison. There was a problem and the 3 Sqn RAAF Engineering Officer developed an additional filter that was fitted entirely inside the air intake trunking at the top of the nose. Nothing different was visible externally so no need to worry about it from a modelling perspective.
