Interceptors GB Chat

Recommended Posts

Who's up for a GB dedicated to interceptors? A celebration of types who's sole purpose has been to intercept and, when required, shoot down other aircraft.

Any aircraft type, missile system, or gun designed specifically or employed to bring down enemy aircraft including weather balloons and satellites.

Been thinking that we've had a lot of attempts at more inclusive GBs lately including a few of my own suggestions but they aren't gaining a lot of interest so how about something a bit more 'targeted' so to speak. Think of all the types that have flown designed for the kill: various US F-types such as the -86D/K/L, -89, Soviet Tu-128 and MiG-25/31, UK Lightning and Javelin... sure you get the idea :)

Sounds good to me, I'm in. I always like the start of group builds as it's interesting waiting for people to try and shoehorn in subjects which obviously don't qualify instead of just picking a subject which obviously does.

Whilst I'm up for the aircraft side of this, I also thought of other possibilities, for instance Destroyers were originally called Torpedo Boat Destroyers and were IIRC, originally intended to intercept Torpedo Boats.  Likewise there's Hunter-Killer submarines, designed to intercept the ballistic missile subs.  Then there's tank destroyers designed specifically to intercept enemy tanks.  Hell, there's even Mad Max's car!

Whilst my entry would definitely be a Cold War jet, I think that if you think laterally you could open the GB up to other genres (and thus avoid the accusation of aircraft bias).

EDIT:  Sorry Col, just re-read your original post but I still think there's merit in trying to open it up nonetheless!  Chances are all of the entries will be aircraft anyway

That didn't take long. For what it's worth my vote goes for sticking with the original concept of interceptor aircraft & maybe, but only maybe, early long range surface to air missiles.

My first thought was, Col wants us all to build a ship from the Pirates of the Caribbean. Luckily, not .

Were there prop driven true interceptors in WW2? Could the German fighter a/c specifically altered to counter US bomber formations be regarded as such, the ones with 21cm grenade launchers or anti tank guns?

Spitfire, Hurricane, interceptors, 109, 190 not, they weren't designed from the outset as interceptors. Col was this your intention when you proposed your subject? If it wasn't I'll shut up.

So in this GB, the single seat Meteors wouldn't qualify as interceptors but the night fighters would?

This starts to get quite tricky, the RAF's Phantoms were mostly originally used as Ground Attack aircraft but by the end of their service they were exclusively used as interceptors, does their original use preclude them?

🙋🏻‍♂️Me please... I can always stand to build another F-86D. I need an F-89, F-101, F-106, and/or an F-4D Skyray in the collection. Would any of the Pursuit aircraft the P- 38, 39, 40, 47, 51, or P-63 count ? Weren't they mostly designed to pursue/intercept enemy bombers and fighters.

But the Phantom was originally designed and entered service as an interceptor. Same as the Tomcat. I don't see how they could be excluded even as both ended up as bombers.

I was planning to start a GB rather than a fight :(

gosh I've been there before and know exactly what it's like!!!

I think it's a great idea, but to nail down what exactly qualifies......well that'll be like herding a bunch of wild cats! Wiki is of no real help with this one (my usual fall back reference...it's nice and simple), it's a real :worms:

this is really tough, I've been reading up for the last 1/2 hour o this and really haven't gotten anywhere! Guess the problem is the "Interceptor" concept that most people know about (sort of) really only lasted for a quite short period 50's to late 70's, with a couple a bit later (F.3 & MiG-31 being the most notable). But the term "Interceptor" can be used to cover a huge range of aircraft (just look at Wiki) which really don't fit what you had originally intended (how often is this the case as well).

I guess this is the issue we have when trying to come up with new fresh and interesting build ideas, people just like building the same old same old stuff!

Okay, so this may not be as straight-forward as I initially envisioned, a good and reasoned discussion which brings light rather than heat to the subject can't be a bad thing though so let's work through it together.

My initial concept was a GB for the aircraft types designed for the single purpose of bringing down other aircraft. Then @Wez, @spaddad, @vppelt68, and @Corsairfoxfourunclehave all given me cause for further thought so let me work through this in no particular order...

Surface to Air missile systems such as the Bloodhound and SA-2 for example make for a valid addition in my opinion. They were, after all, designed and deployed to bring down enemy aircraft. A step further takes us to anti-aircraft guns such as the Flak 88 or the 'pom-pom' guns found on many Allied ships. Again we could argue their sole purpose was to bring down enemy aircraft. Do we then open out to anyone willing enough to build a flak ship?

Beyond that comes the possibility of including hunter-killer subs and tank hunter type AFVs.

How about I rename this to the Built For The Kill GB?

No. Sod it. Let me narrow this back down and plead guilty to the charge of aircraft bias. The Wikipedia page @Corsairfoxfourunclehas linked covers my thoughts on the matter pretty well but in summary let me offer up this parameter:-

Any aircraft type or missile system designed specifically or employed to bring down enemy aircraft including weather balloons and satellites.

...he carefully pokes his head up and says.......

This may have been closer to what @Col. had originally intended, this is only for US aircraft, but those listed fit the "definition" perfectly. I haven't located to equivalent one for other nations yet.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerospace_Defense_Command

......he then bravely say's......

I would put a time frame on the build and limit it to Mid 50's and later Jet aircraft (that way you don't get swamped with Spitfires & Mustangs) and maybe exclude lightweight Air Superiority stuff like F-16's, MiG-29's etc?

....he then scampers back down his hole never to be seen again!!!

Actually thats not a bad idea ? You could then play this out into multiple group builds, like the NATO builds we all enjoy. Something like Cold war (1950-1990) for the first one. The next one could be the World Wars and the Interwar period. Covering the Zepplin and Gotha interceptors of the Great war. Up to the concept aircraft in the 20's & 30's that developed into interceptor's like the spitfire and Hurricane.

Sounds like a plan to me, I'm always up for a Lightning build :)

There was a quote on a sticker I had a few years ago that went something like;

"There are only 2 types of aircraft, the Lightning and targets"

Now I wonder if anyone makes a model of a Jensen Interceptor 🤔🤔

Ian :)

Bah, you're good @whiskey.  The F-4 and later the F-14s primary role was as the US Navy's fleet defense interceptors (how many hundreds or Bears did they intercept & escort over the decades).  They may have occasionally carried bombs...but that role typically handled by the A-4s, A-6s, & A-7s.

Long range, high speed, and the ability to reach out and touch someone BVR (beyond visual range).

I'm going to stick with this definition and not narrow it down to a particular era. That way we can have anything from the BE.2c which were used to bring down Zeppelins, through (much to @trickyrich's horror :D ) all the Spitfires and Hurricanes and Defiants and Blenheims used to attack incoming bomber formations, the Me-262 and Me-163 Komet, yes @spaddadthe Bf-109 and Fw-190 going against the massed hoards of USAF bombers, various MiG and LaGG types doing the same over Russia, all the various nightfighter designs, the many US P-numbers as noted by @Corsairfoxfouruncle and then F-numbers that followed including the F-4 discussed by @whiskey and @Wez so long as it's shown in fighter trim rather than loaded up with enough bombs to obliterate a North Vietnamese village, the US 'Teen' fighters such as the F-14, -15, -16, and -18 again so long as shown in fighter trim rather than lugging around enough bombs to embarrass a B-17, the Lightning purely 'cause any excuse to build a Lighning is a good one in my opinion and this is my GB proposal so :tease: , all the Cold War MiG, Yak, Su, Tu, numbers so long as they are also shown tooled up for air defence rather than earth moving, the Tornado F.3 and Sea Harrier  then coming to now with the F-22 and Eurofighter Typhoon.

Everyone happy with that? Tough. I'm starting a list later today and will include everyone who's got involved thus far but will understand if you don't feel these parameters suit your needs so just let me know and I'll remove your name :)

Well I'm in if the timing is right with something British, American or French from the 50's or 60's
