Dambusters 70th - 6 Years Late: Tornado 1/72 Airfix

Recommended Posts

Some time ago I grabbed one of the 'Limited Edition' (2000) Airfix TORNADO 617 Squadron kit, Celebrating the 70th ANNIVERSARY of the DAMBUSTERS. As this month is the 75th anniversary it seemed like a good time to build this:

(Image thanks to scalemates.com)

Scalemates tells me this is a rebox of the 1989 tooling. Old Airfix then. Oh dear.

Courage mon brave (that's French, that is) - it may not be that bad. Let's see how the fuselage goes together:

Ah. Well. Press on chaps.

Quick pictures of the parts trees then…

Bit weird these. They seem to have been chopped up to fit in the box:

… and this bit seems warped and the seats don't look too hot:

Lots (and lots) of dangly bits though…

First job is to get the crew primed:

Flashy little bu**ers eh?

Note that this is the first kit that I've used my new 'Samurai saw' on 'in anger'.

Show off :D

Let battle commence.

Welcome John :) No rubbing in the pews please…

I'll slide in as well if I may? I take it this will be another fully loaded on the ceiling build?

Welcome Roger - fully loaded is the plan :)

Ced

😁😁😁

Thanks Bill :D

All those names… sounds like my Mother-in-Law, bless her. She usually goes down the list of family names and, often, stops at the right one.

It's been confirmed - nasty, hard Airfix plastic. I had to move up to the 'Medium' Molding Flash Sander:

I think I'll leave that on the bench and go over the parts before I start. Bound to be more flash eh. Rats.

The boys have had their coat of Ratskin Flesh:

Now I have to drive off to Leicestershire again. The Puppy is under the knife today to correct her bendy front legs, poor thing. We've volunteered to have her for the two weeks recovery. All we have to do is stop her jumping. A ha ha ha. This is the pup that one minute is across the room and next thing is on your chest. Should be fun.

Built one of these when it was just a GR1, many years ago in my teens. i remember the fuselage having the same fit issues way back then and the chunky sprues, but the swing wings worked great😀

Good to see you went for that relaxing mojo restorer...

its a jet, and a big tornado @giemme must be over the moon. I joke, the tornado is and icon and in 70th dambusters livery, what’s not to like!

i’ll tag along if allowed

Of course you're allowed Rob, great to have you here :)

Well, things are going to be on hold for a while I'm afraid. Tilly's had her op and is now here for a week or so of recuperation:

40934986103_b927d28de1_z.jpg

Poor pups. She had 'Quenn Anne Legs' so, to save problems later, has had both her thin 'forearm' bones chopped to correct it.

She doesn't know, of course, that she's not allowed to charge around for two weeks, at least.

She has to have, three times a day, a five minute walk around the garden followed by a massage, then joint exercise, then a cold compress and lots of TLC.

I've booked myself for the operation as soon as I can make it :D

Interesting build! :)

Wonder what Airfix did with that kit 1989? Doesn't look to different compared to the old kit from 1975. Those sprues are changed but the parts look much the same...

I was on the Lanc for the 617 RIAT flypast last year, with the Tonka and F35 - that was rather special. But nothing compared to the look of poor old Tilly, best of luck with trying to keep a pup quiet, been there myself, almost impossible!

Looks like you're gonna be very busy with Tilly - I hope she recovers well.

This, of course, will allow us to catch a breath and be able to keep your pace once you restart with the Tonka... :D

........time passes........

Ok all up to date. This looks like you’re going to have fun Mr B. Old Airfix for us both it seems. 🥳 I’ll tag along if that's ok. Hope Tilly gets better. Amazing how I seem to have picked dog names for both my kids.

Matilda. (Tilly) and Milo. 🐶🐶👫

Awww, poor pup, get well soon Tilly!

Don't think the moulding on that Tonka is going to get better any time soon though Ced!!

K

PS don't you think it's time you changed your 'interests' - when was the last time you did a "WW2 Europe 1/72 aircraft kit builds" ?! :)

page 1?

*edit*  Yes !!!

It's not often I make it onto a Page 1 Cedbuild, but when I do...I take up an awful lot of space.

Looks like you have your work cut out there getting mating surfaces to mate, or even be in the same neighborhood judging by those photos

The OLD Airfix Tonka can make a reasonable model

I quite enjoyed it, but this was c.1985

Weather_or_not_skies_above_013.jpg

We built an in-branch diorama

Weather-or-not-skies-above-007.jpg

Unfortunately we all started with a different model Tornado and it never made it to the Nationals

As you can see I had to redo the wing box to make it sit higher than the fuselage but not a horridly out of shape model

Mind you, I looks at this and wonder if Id get away with so little interiors detail these days...
